He was 75. He was the son of the late Pearl Flax, née Sternbane and Benjamin Flax of Worcester. He was a devoted father to his daughter Margalit “Mara” Flax Gibbs who predeceased him in 2017.
Steve was born in Worcester on April 25, 1948, graduated as valedictorian of Classical High School in 1966, from Harvard College in 1970 and received his Master of Architecture degree in the MArch Option III program from the University of California, Berkeley. Accomplished and successful, he remained a grounded and humble soul.
Truly brilliant and quirky, kind and considerate, thoughtful and perceptive, Flax was a voracious reader, owned hundreds of books and had read them all. He especially liked history. He didn’t own a television set until 2019, when illness dictated the necessity. He valued his many long-term friendships and was a thoughtful and generous gift-giver. Truly, Margalit was the love of his life and her death in a fire was a terrible tragedy that he bore with dignity and sadness for the rest of his life. He was, above all, an exceptional human being, and someone we were all proud to call our friend.
