Born in St. Austell, England, she was the only child of George and Irene Harper. Betty enjoyed growing up by the seashore with many friends and cousins. After graduating from secondary school, she worked for the fire department during World War II.
In 1944, Betty met American soldier Arthur Bridgwood at a dance in her hometown. They were married later that year and after the war, she sailed to New York to begin her life in the United States. Betty and Arthur settled in Astoria, NY and welcomed a daughter, Linda. They later moved to Levittown and Bohemia on Long Island.
Betty worked for many years at Mays Department Store and Commercial Union Insurance. She was an avid reader, gardener and baker—her brownies, pasty pies and “Broken Glass Cake” were not to be missed!
Betty loved taking walks and spending time by the water. Betty and Arthur took many trips back to England to visit her friends and family, and also enjoyed traveling to different states and Bermuda.
After retiring, Betty and Arthur moved to Lancaster, PA. They celebrated 61 years of marriage before Arthur passed away in 2006. Betty then relocated to Canton to be with her daughter.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was predeceased by her son in law, Peter Grimm.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Grimm of Canton; granddaughters Cindy (Jason) Aikens of Canton and Vicky (Scott) Hollenbeck of Ellicott City, MD; and great grandchildren Angie, Jack, Katie and Matthew.
The funeral will be a private ceremony, per Betty’s wishes.
