

Charles was born January 31, 1934 in Massillon, Ohio to the late Charles S. and Merretta (Yost) Vliet. He was honored as an All American football player in 1951 for the Massillon Tigers, where he was team captain of the defense. In 1950, he set a record of 42 tackles in 58 plays that still stands today. Charles was an avid fisher, hunter, and golfer, and loved to take his family on vacations. Charles was a veteran of the US Army National Guard serving as a Corporal in the 145th Infantry. He was the owner of Vliet Asphalt providing paving and seal-coating for 40 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marian L. Vliet; daughter, Pamela S. Baker; and son, Charles F. Vliet. He is survived by his grandchildren, Lake (Eric) Minor, Lydia Blake, and Charles A. Vliet; great-grandchildren, Cirene Minor, Leah Blake, and Anthony L. Vliet; and loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 5, 2022 in the Karlo-Libby Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Rd. NW, Canton. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park. Friends may call on Saturday from 11:00am-1:00pm, two hours before services, at the funeral home. A special thank you to Elara Hospice and the caring nursing staff at The Danbury of Massillon for going above and beyond in their care of Charles.
