Lawrence David Baughman

Larry was proud of his Akron roots. He often told stories about his childhood adventures in Goosetown and growing up in the congregation at Concordia Lutheran Church on Sumner Street. While studying at University of Akron, Larry worked in the rubber shops at Goodyear and Firestone, and he tended bar at Anthe’s on Bowery. In his spare time, he acted as song leader for his fraternity brothers in Lambda Chi Alpha. After he married his devoted wife, Marilyn, he pursued a master’s degree in education and became a teacher in the Akron Public Schools. He taught at Thornton and West Junior High Schools before becoming assistant principal at Central Hower and then Ellet High. He loved meeting “Akron kids” when they were all grown up and hearing about their lives and families.

After retiring from APS, Larry and Marilyn enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and took many tours and cruises. Larry participated in regular poker games, routinely met his personal goal of golfing 5 times per week, and helped his daughter move into at least 8 different apartments in 10 years. He hosted pig roasts for fellow parishioners at St. Stephen Martyr Lutheran Church in Jackson Township and helped plan outings with golf buddies and members of the Buckeye Cruisers. Marilyn is fond of saying that he never met a stranger.

Larry is survived by Marilyn, to whom he was married for 59 years; their only daughter, Sarah Baughman; son-in-law, Luis Larralde; 3 loving grandchildren; countless Irish cousins; and a vast chosen family. He will be missed by all.

A visitation for Lawrence will be held Tuesday, December 31, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Stephen Martyr Lutheran Church, 4600 Fulton Drive NW, Canton, OH 44718, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM.

Larry’s family would like to thank the staff at Challenge Golf for helping him get back on the links after his stroke in 2019. They are also extremely grateful to the nurses and doctors at Summa hospice for excellent care in Larry’s final days.
