

Services for John Lawson Sherwood, 88, of Myrtle Springs, will be held 10AM, Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton with Bro. Homer Morgan officiating. Interment will be in Myrtle Springs Cemetery.
He was born June 15, 1936 to Cecil Wesley and Sarah Alice Wood Sherwood in Edgewood TX . Mr. Sherwood passed away on June 18, 2024 in Grand Saline, TX with his nephew, Wesley Sherwood Jr. by his side.
John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1956, was discharged in 1962 and then re-enlisted again later to continue serving till 1984 when he retired. While in the Navy John served as a Navy Photographer, he was a member of the Navy Choir while serving in the Great Lakes. While serving on the USS Forrestal in the Gulf of Tonkin off the Coast of Vietnam on June the 29th 1967 John was awoken by explosions and they were ordered to Battle Stations This is not a drill! John took many of the photos and film of the ensuing fire and firefighting on that day, which are still used today for training in the US Navy. On that day he accepted Christ as his Savior knowing it was Christ that saved them all. He proudly retired from the Navy in 1984 and returned to Myrtle Springs where he remained till his passing. Upon retirement from the Navy John worked for 20 years with the former E-Systems, which became Raytheon and later L3Harris where he became known as Little John. He and his Brothers Wesley and Grady carpooled together to work daily till their individual retirements. John supported the RC135 Big Safari Programs and other US Military contracts in the Harness Shop and outside the shop as needed. He was a member of the Myrtle Springs Volunteer Fire Department He loved spending time with his family and was a very generous man. He cared for his Mother at her home till her death and also supported any family member that needed his assistance till his death.
Mr. Sherwood is preceded in death by his parents: Cecil Sherwood and Alice Young; step father, Mitchell Young; infant brother, Cecil Sherwood; sister, Faye Yates; and brothers, Grady Sherwood, Steve Sherwood and Wesley Sherwood Sr.
John never married but is survived by the nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces; and great great nephews and nieces thru his sister, Faye Yates; and brothers, Grady Sherwood, Steve Sherwood and Wesley Sherwood Sr.
Pallbearers will be James Sherwood, Michael Sherwood, Mitchell Sherwood, Jeremy Gregory, Herman Martin and Kevin Martin.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
