Carolyn Sue Maes, age 82, of Cape Coral, Florida passed away peacefully in her sleep at 9:00 PM on Sunday, December 3, 2023. She died in the care of Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Florida, following a long battle with dementia.
Carolyn was born September 14, 1941, in Morehouse, Missouri, to Joseph Robert Tucker and Clara Amlett (Lindsey) Tucker. She was the fifth of seven children. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to the east central area of Mississippi near Amory, where she grew up.
She married William Sherman Vaughn in the late nineteen fifties and they had a son, Robert Upton Vaughn, on January 2, 1960. Following their divorce, Carolyn married Billy Wayne Morris and settled in the Denver, Colorado area. They had a son, Jeffrey Scott Morris, on October 11, 1965, in Denver. They divorced in 1979.
Carolyn met her future husband, Terry R. Maes, in the late seventies and after a three year courtship, were married on November 27, 1982 in Westminster, Colorado. In 1989, they moved to Cape Coral, Florida to follow a new job opportunity for Terry.
Carolyn worked as a "flag Girl" for a road construction company in Colorado, and a contract mail carrier in Florida. She greatly enjoyed her work and was very good at both. She enjoyed being with family and friends, bowling, working in the yard, and the occasional trip to the range.
Tragedy struck Carolyn's life with the unexpected deaths of both her sons, Jeffrey in 2011 and Robert in 2020. She never got over it; she couldn't ever come to grips with that loss.
Carolyn was also preceded in death by her brothers Mack, James Earl, and Harold; and her sisters Bernadeen Miller and Eursel Norman.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Terry Maes, her sister Janette Baldwin, daughter-in-law Laurie (Morris) Wilson, grandchildren Ashley (Vaughn) Jackson, Kyle Morris, Robert "Robby" Vaughn and Kayla Morris, nieces Kimberly Musselwhite, Jeannie Lockley, Patricia Cooley, and nephew Jay Tucker.
Per Carolyn's wishes, there will be no viewing, visitation, or formal funeral service. Instead, there will be a "Graveside Gathering" for family and friends to celebrate her life. This will be held on Monday, December 11, 2023 at 1:00 PM on the northern side of Coral Ridge Cemetery, 950 Chiquita Blvd S, Cape Coral, Florida 33991. There will be no formal speaker, so those who wish to speak may do so. This will be followed by Carolyn's entombment to her final resting place.
In Lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Carolyn's name to the Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa FL, or Hope Hospice, Cape Coral FL. Moffitt gave Carolyn an extended life expectancy following pancreatic cancer; and Hope Hospice House cared for her during the last days of her life's journey. Her husband, Terry, is extremely grateful to both.
