You could find Doug hiking Cadillac Mountain or snowmobiling through fresh Maine "powdah". Fishing off the coasts of Southwest Florida or kayaking through the Gulf. While walking trails he would be the first to point out a wild animal or somehow make out that bald eagle a mile away. He'd be the first to notice a shooting star, or go outside during a hurricane just to "check it out". A man that could appreciate a sunset and nature as a whole. But above all Douglas was a family man. Starting with his endearing love for his wife Serena. Douglas was a model husband and an amazing father and grandfather. Nothing made Doug more proud or happier than being surrounded by his family he created. His love for them was worn on his sleeve, and now will be carried in their hearts.
Doug was born in Lewiston, Maine on October 5, 1957. He was one of 8 siblings. Doug loved growing up in Maine, he would agree it is, the way life should be. It is here Doug developed his passion for the outdoors, and his appreciation for nature. Doug would later yearn to share these adventures with his future family.
In 1977, Doug joined the U.S Navy and would also gain his proudest title in life, becoming a father. With former wife and now good friend Penny, Doug welcomed his first and only son, Allen. Doug then traveled the world as a trained jet mechanic on assignments including NAS Pensacola, NAS Sigonella Sicily, NAS Oceana, and on the Aircraft Carrier, The U.S. America.
1981, while in Italy, Doug met the love of his life, aircraft electrician and fellow veteran, Serena. Doug and Serena would spark an iconic 36-year marriage on December 27, 1983. In 1985 Doug would again be blessed with his second child, daughter Shavonne Marie. In 1991 Doug would complete his own little family with his last baby girl, daughter Jessica Rose.
After serving the U.S. Navy for 22 years combined active duty and as a civilian contractor,
Doug moved his little family back to Maine where he started and owned a variety of small businesses such as a Roofing and Seamless Gutter company, with clever catch phrases such as "gutter have us!". From there Doug and his wife, Serena, relocated their family to Alabama for a few years before making their farthest journey south to Southwest Florida. The children would grow as they tend to do, and with his undying love and support they were off to start their own journeys in the voyage of life. In 2013 Doug was gifted with his first grandson, Zachary. In 2015 he was bestowed with his first granddaughter, Madison. In 2019 Doug was blessed with his last grandson named Cole. Doug was a devoted father and grandfather of the highest caliber until his very last breathe in 2020.
Doug is survived by his wife Serena, his son Allen, and daughters Shavonne and Jessica, also grandchildren Zachary, Madison, and Cole. Doug is also remembered fondly by many family and friends whom he loved dearly.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents Rose and James Howes; and bothers James Jr. and Richard Howes.
A private memorial will be held at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
