Born on January 23, 1930, in New York City to the late Giro and Rose (Ribolini) Cestaro, Gene carried the vibrancy of his hometown with him throughout his life. A proud graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, Gene’s passion for sports blossomed early through basketball and baseball.
He began his career with the New York Transit Authority as a clerk and, through nearly five decades of dedication and leadership, rose to the position of manager. His commitment to his work was only matched by his devotion to family and the joy he found in everyday moments.
Gene never lost his athletic spirit—he was an avid golfer, bowler and aspiring artist well into his later years. Those who knew him will remember his magnetic personality, his razor-sharp sense of humor, and the way he could light up any room with laughter. He was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose love and warmth touched countless lives. Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Marian in 2016; as well as his big brother, Patrick who passed during WWII.
Gene is survived by his brother, Alfred (Cathy), from New Mexico, and his two loving children, Patricia LaSpina and Richard Cestaro (Josephine); three grandchildren, Richie Jr. (Michelle), Anthony (Colleen) and Francesca (Kevin), as well as six great grandchildren, Gabriella Rose, Gianna, Giulietta, Vincent, Leanna and Anthony John.
Gene leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and perseverance. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
