George Richard (Rick) Bauer passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021 at HealthPark Hospital at the age of 74. Known by those who loved him most as Rick, Dad, Grampa and Papa, he was loved dearly by so many and will be sorely missed by us all.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy, his six children, Shawn, Shellie (Richie), Jaime (Ty), Dominick (Maelinda), Tiffany (Nick) and Cortney (Jason), as well as his twelve grandchildren Jacqueline (26), Jarod (23), Anthony (15), Blake (14), Austin (14), Abigail (12), Alexis (11), Cadence (9), Evelyn (8), Danielle (8), Carter (4) and Chase (1).
Rick was born in the Bronx New York to Evelyn Frances Ward Bauer and George Edwin Bauer (both deceased) on April 15, 1946. He grew up in New York and graduated from MacArthur High School where he played basketball. When one of his best friends’ numbers came up for the draft, he and his two best friends decided to enlist together. Rick met his first wife Sandra Stagner (deceased) while serving in the Air Force and stationed in Colorado. He was stationed in Alaska after that.
After Rick’s honorable discharge from the Air Force, he and his family moved back to Long Island, New York. Rick attended the police academy and was a Nassau County Police officer until 1986 when he retired and moved to Florida with his family, including his parents. In 1996 Rick met his second wife Tammy Trent Bauer, and they were married on February 14th, 1998. They renewed their vows on their 20th anniversary, February 14th 2018.
Rick was a wonderful father and grandfather, who loved his family with his whole heart - and he had the biggest heart! He was very strong in his faith in God and our savior Jesus Christ, and we know he is now at peace in the house of the Lord. He loved to joke around and be silly. At family gatherings we could always count on him to do something silly, like putting a bag, bow or wrapping paper on his head or saying silly things like “docccccchter pepper” to make us laugh. He was also a life-long devoted NY Yankees, fan, but we never held that against him.
Rick was multi-talented. He loved to play the piano, keyboard and guitar, and his family loved to hear him play. He was self-taught and couldn’t read music very well, but you would never know that by listening to him play! He could play any song by ear, but if you asked him if he had played it by ear, he would tell you “No, I played it with my hands”. He loved to bowl, especially with his son Dominick, and held a record of an amazing 26 consecutive strikes! He shared a love of fishing and boating with his son Shawn, and enjoyed golfing with his friends, sons and sons-in-law. Rick was very handy around the house, and was known for rearranging the furniture (and sometimes even the walls!) pretty frequently. He was always available to help out with painting or fixing things for his friends and family. He also loved to putter around in his garage where he would build custom wood gifts and decorations for his family.
Rick leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will live on in his wife, children and grandchildren. He was truly one in a million. We were extremely blessed to have him in our lives, and will always cherish our memories with him.
We will be honoring dad and celebrating his life and the amazing legacy of love he leaves behind this Saturday, January 16th, at 11:00 am at Cypress Lake Presbyterian Church (8260 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers 33919). We welcome all those who also loved dad to come remember and honor him with us.
