Born Elpida (Hope) Vasiliou on January 6, 1933, in Mitilini, Greece, Hope's early years were marked by resilience as she survived the German occupation before emigrating with her family to the United States at the age of 14. She settled in the Boston area prior to making a home in Watertown, MA, with her parents, Peter and Bessie Vasiliou, and her beloved sister, Helen.
After attending school and working at Shreve, Crump & Low, Hope met the love of her life, Alexander N. Hunter, at a Greek dance. They married and shared a remarkable 66-year journey together, raising three children: Irene, Nicholas, and Peter. Hope's primary dedication was to her family, and she parented her children with a sweet, confident grace that left a lasting impact on all who knew her. Hope was also known as an excellent cook, making the finest Spanakopita, Dolmades, Pastitsio and Greek salad for her family, friends and church community at the Taxiachae Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown where she was active in the Philoptochos Society.
After raising their children in Watertown, MA and living in Arlington and Lexington, MA, Hope and Alexander retired to Cape Coral, FL, 35 years ago and then moved to Ft. Myers and Tampa, FL. In retirement, they remained active in their faith and community, with Hope contributing her time and energy to the Philoptochos Society at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Myers, FL. Hope and Al also traveled around the world to many continents and countries including several trips to their homeland of Greece.
Hope is survived by her three children, Irene Desroches and husband Pierre Desroches of Tampa FL, Nicholas A. Hunter and wife Ellen Hunter of Hingham, MA and Peter A. Hunter and his wife Meredith A. Hunter of Beverly Farms, MA. Hope is also blessed with seven grandchildren, four step grandchildren and seven great grandchildren always offering support and keeping up with every detail of their lives. She was a selfless woman, always concerned with the well-being of others.
