Eulogy For The Late Olive “Olga” Pottinger Greaves
The Lady | Her Legacy | Our Mother | Classy & Elegant 


1963
Mummy and Daddy were married and settled in Crouch End, North London. Caron and Aldwin were babies. 

1965
Mummy joined a theatre group and this is where she met Aunty P, who is standing here with us today, who we affectionately call our 2nd Mum. Their friendship grew and lasted 60 years, a testament to Aunty P who put up with Mummy’s bougie behaviour on numerous occasions. We always called Mummy “Mrs Jones” (aka: keeping up with the Joneses)!

Aunty P reminded us that when she heard from Mummy over the years, she knew there would be an issue to be sorted. Mummy would say “here comes Calamity Jane”, as nothing was ever straightforward or easy, and you knew it would be the storm before the calm. It helps that Aunty P has the patience of a Saint. 

1966
Donna came along in January and in July of 1970, Allister arrived, and what a joy to have a Little Brother, as I thought I was going to be the youngest. That was it, the three older siblings did not have a chance against Allister, as we knew he was Mummy’s Favourite. :o)

Growing up, Aldwin, Allister and I remembered Christmas at Park Ridings where Uncle Noel and family lived. 

When we went to visit, it was like being in Jamaica, as the accents were strong, the culture was all around us and the stories told were amazing. 

Be careful though, as when in the company of the Legendary Pottinger Massive, we all knew a debate would ensue, with Uncle Noel, Stafford, Mummy, Dennis and Aunty June, watch out, as you had to hold your corner and stand firm. Of course, it was either Uncle Noel or Mummy who tried to have the last word, with Stafford, Dennis and Aunty June deciding which side they would take. And as always Ms Fay would be in the kitchen serving up cakes and pudding.

Mummy’s Eulogy ~ Part 2

1974 ~ Mid/Late 80s
Mummy purchased her first home in Leyton, East London in 1974, and we thought it was a palace, even before it was decorated, as our previous accommodation had an external facility. We all know Mummy had expensive taste, so when she decorated it was all high-end and proper posh looking. 

We admired our Mum as she single-handedly raised 3 children (at the time ~ Aldwin 10 / Donna 7 / Allister 3), she worked hard, and had no less than two jobs on the go at once, we were always well presented, and had a hot meal when we arrived home from school. 

Mummy worked in the NHS for the majority of her career, as a Nursing Auxiliary and later as a District Nurse, and I remember her saying “I am going to retire at 60” and move to Florida to be with her siblings, Aunty Pat, Aunty Gilion and Uncle John, Aunty Greta lived in Chicago. 

Frien Barnet was a Psychiatric Hospital and this is where Mummy met Mrs Evans, Mrs Harvey and Ms Waple who became her lifelong friends to this day. Ms Waple and Mummy are now together again. 

Mummy had a passion for Cricket, we would say she was a fanatic, and with Cousin Stafford, if the West Indies were playing try not to interrupt an Over. Malcolm Marshall / Michael Holding / Andy Roberts / Joel Garner “Big Bird” / Courtney Ambrose & Walsh were a few of her favourites. 

1981 (ish)
As we all know Mummy loved to cook and entertain, and as her children we were biased. Most of us tasted Mummy’s cooking, so you know what I am talking about, and do not get me started on the Basmati Rice & Peas, and all the other trimmings. 

We looked forward to Christmas and Easter as there was nuff food to be had, and you know Mummy had everything on the table. Our friends would travel from South London to make sure they had some of Mummy’s Famous Apple Crumble and Fruit Punch (aka: Bubble Gum Drink), they were well nice.

Mummy’s Eulogy ~ Part 3

During the 80s, we were fortunate to meet Lisa Clarke, who is also standing here with us today, who is like a Sister, and who, as luck would have it worked in the Food Industry. Another lifelong friendship was formed with Lisa and Mummy, collaborating on recipes, exchanging ideas, and eventually working together on various catering jobs. 

Believe me, the food we had was amazing, as Lisa added a few twists and fusions with not only our traditional West Indian ingredients, but with food from around the world. 

1987
Mummy purchased her 2nd home, and sadly this was the same year Daddy took his final breath. 

Also, during this time Mummy started Fostering, and opened her home to children who were less fortunate than us, she nurtured, guided, and provided a safe, warm and comfortable environment, and when it was time for the young person to move on, it was quite difficult to let go. One young lady Karen King is still with us today, and again she is like a Sister, as she adopted Mummy’s teachings and values, which have taken her through her life to this day. 

1990s
Mummy joined Shernall Street Methodist Church in the 90s, and was an active member of the congregation. She became great friends with the Paster and his wife Wesley & Sandra Lee. We all attended Mummy’s Confirmation, and of course, the reception was well attended, as Mummy did the catering, her speciality!

Mummy loved to travel and went to all the places she had dreamed of and of course, Aunty P her key Bredrin was right there with her. Gwaarn Aunty P ~ Together they joined Global Friends a Travel Club. 

They went on: - 
•	Cruises to various destinations with family and friends
•	And Mummy did a trip on the Orient Express for Mother’s Day

Mummy’s Eulogy ~ Part 4

1993 ~ Early 2000s
1993 ~ This was the year of Mummy’s 50th Birthday, and for those who were there it was a “Hollywood Production”. 

It was all hands-on deck, everyone had a role, and we had to do our best not to forget our lines or drop the ball, as Mummy was a bit of a perfectionist, especially when she was entertaining, everything had to be just so, and don’t forget all the outfits from each decade as modelled on the day. 

Mummy was a trailblazer, taking on challenging tasks, as on one occasion, she  Roasted A Whole Pig ~ no pun intended, she went the “whole hog” for a New Year’s Eve Party, and she always did most things bigger and better, pushing through the boundaries.

2006 ~ 2025
Mummy Retired to Florida and started another chapter of her life with her Siblings Aunty Pat, Aunty Gilion, and extended family. 

Building a beautiful bungalow, working a little part-time job, and enjoying the sunshine, which helped with her arthritis. When she settled, she had a 65th Birthday Celebration in her new home. 

Unfortunately, Mummy became extremely ill and was in hospital for some time. Thereafter, her health steadily began to decline, eventually resulting in dementia. Over the last few years from around 2011, we noticed Mummy was struggling with her memory, although she was able to attend Lisa & Devon’s wedding in London, which was another grand production, and what about that hat, which is also featured in the tribute gallery. We criss-crossed the UK, taking Mum to visit family and friends who she had not seen for a while ~ it was like “Driving Ms Daisy”! 

2014 
Aldwin travelled to Florida to support the concerns around Mummy’s failing health, and it was eventually decided she would be better served in a care facility.

Mummy’s Eulogy ~ Part 5 

We celebrated Mummy’s 80th Birthday in May 2023, which was lovely, as she was playful and upbeat on the day. This was our last visit with Mummy. 

Mummy is survived by 6 Children, 11 Grand Children, 1 Great Grand Child, Nieces & Nephews some of whom are here today. 

We would like to thank all those who contributed to Mummy’s care, and a special heartfelt thank you to Joan & Judith. 

We all have great memories of a truly remarkable individual, who we are proud to have called “Mummy”.

Our deepest condolences to Caron, Aldwin, Donna & Alistaire on behalf of Monica Harvey and family in London. My mother Monica worked with Olga at Friern Barnet Hospital where they alongside others formed a life long friendship throughout life’s bumpy ride. Growing up I realised that friends become family because as children we referred to her as Aunty Olga. When I got married it was Aunty Olga and her sister from another mister Aunty P who took care of the catering. As a child I literally thought she was from the black aristocracy because she spoke in such a posh twang. My children fondly referred to her as the cat lady because in her front garden she had these tiny black cats. The stories are endless and her humour would make your belly bust and leave you gasping for air. Rest in perfect peace Aunty Olga, I’ll see you when the trumpet calls and we are all caught up to meet HIM in the air. Love you forever Samantha Harvey

I find myself lost for words trying to write this, not knowing where to start because how do you put a lifespan of love, memories, and warmth into just a few lines.

My grandma was the heart of our family. She was generous, funny, and strong. Some of my earliest and most cherished memories were going to Grandma’s house: the scent of her cooking drifting through the whole house, the glass jars filled with candy on her side table, and the fruit magnets on her fridge. It gave true Caribbean household. I still remember those little wooden calendar blocks I used to love turning over each morning. 

One thing I’d always say about Grandma is that she was hilarious always cracking jokes, especially the ones people would usually just keep in their heads. My grandma would say them out loud, and everyone would be in fits of laughter. She was direct and always said it how it was, which I absolutely loved about her. Sunday mornings getting ready for church were a core memory. She loved dressing up and socialising—making sure everyone saw her outfit. I remember my  Grandma showing us photos of the wedding she attended and she wore this stunning gold outfit—you’d honestly think she was the celebrant! She was so confident and always took pride in how she looked. Even when we were shopping in a department store in America, looking for an outfit for her, and everything looked a bit too “retirement-style,” Grandma said, “Mi nah deh yet,” and I burst out laughing. She was about 63 at the time and had the best fashion sense! 

It saddens me because she wanted to see me get married. Even when I had Isaiah at a young age, she never judged me. She just told me not to have any more children until I’m married—and that’s a promise I intend to keep. Knowing she had her first child young too, I believe she deeply empathised with what I was going through. I wish I could go back to the house in Chingford where those memories live. But I carry them with me and I’ll never forget the love you gave.

Olga, my Soul Sister, was my dear friend and confidant. I met her at a time when I needed a friend. Olga didn’t just befriended me, she also extended her friendship and generosity to my children. I was, am and will always be grateful. Olga, my Soul Sister, I love and respect you. May your soul rest in peace and rise in glory.

You’ll always be remembered for those beautiful, regal purples and the bright, bold colours you loved to wear, they matched your vibrant spirit perfectly.

For your wonderful sense of humour and sharp, quick way of speaking that never held back but always came from a place of love.

You opened your home with kindness and warmth, nurturing so many lives around you. I remember you preparing those gourmet Sunday dinners, with us helping out in the kitchen, and you sitting at the head of the table sharing stories and laughter.

You showed us that same love and joy, when we visited America. I’ll never forget how you’d try to beat the traffic lights, we’d all shout, “Stop, man, stop!” laughing every time.

You’ll be deeply missed by all who knew you.

Your spirit lives on eternally in our hearts.

Grandma,

You already planted so many fond memories, that I’ll hold onto forever.

I remember my early childhood, especially at Christmas. That content feeling sitting at your table. A full belly, yet still craving mince pies and monkey nuts after dinner. You always insisted that I learn proper table etiquette... but I still eat with my fork in my right hand.

I’ll never forget Florida., staying in your bungalow felt like stepping into a dream. Everything was so sunny and exciting, yet you made it feel familiar just by being there. My first experience in America was truly magical and you were right at the centre of it.

So much is coming back.

You gave so much of yourself, your love, your charisma, your energy. Those are the things that shaped my fondest memories of you, and they’ll stay with me always.

Rest in eternal peace,  Grandma, I’ll always love you.

Cousin Olga was a fun-loving, free-spirited, and joyful soul. She had a deep passion for cooking for family, dancing, and celebrating life to the fullest. I have such warm memories of the time she stayed with my mother and me in New York; she went everywhere with me and my daughter, Sanaa. They would sing and dance together in our living room, filling our home with joy and laughter. She even came along to the doctor's appointment, always ready to offer a helping hand. Cousin Olga was kind, generous, and endlessly supportive of the people she loved. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.

Dearest Godmother Olga, I will always remember you. We hadn't seen each other for a while, but your larger than life character has always been in the background of my life, pushing me forward to do by best and to be heard. As a child and a teenager, you gave me your love and care. I can remember the lovely soft rugs in your house, your huge TV screen, sharing a bed with you and you thinking that I was dead as I hardly move, apparently, during the night :-)  I loved your strong Jamaican accent, and how you used to put on a posh English voice to answer the phone. That made us chuckle. You did so well in your life, always pushing forward, and striving to leave your mark. Well, you have certainly succeeded. Many people will remember you. Have a safe journey to your next destination. See you soon. Love, Sharon (goddaughter).

My. Dearest cousin you will be terrible missed we had some memorable time together while staying with us in NY.  We  had so much fun with you. Well one thing we will never forget is the baking of cupcakes for Sanaas  Birthday she has that down packed, she got the skills of baking and thanks to you. We had such great time singing, dancing, cooking great meals you will be missed, and  always be remembered forever. And now all the pain and suffering is over you are with the Lord and other family members
