Born on August 7, 1947, in Hicksville, OH, Owen was the son of the late Russell and Mae (Slatton) Walter. He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard, a chapter of his life that not only shaped his character but also led him to the love of his life. While stationed in Bermuda, he met Ethelyn, and from that moment forward, their lives were intertwined for 56 beautiful years.
Owen enjoyed a long and successful career with the City of Cape Coral Utilities Department, where he served as an Electrical Instrumentation Supervisor until his retirement. It was there he earned the nickname “Sparky”—after getting shocked on the job one day—and the name stuck with him ever since.
Deeply rooted in his community, Owen was a dedicated soccer and baseball coach at the Cape Coral Soccer and Baseball Complexes. He influenced countless young athletes with his patience, humor, and unwavering belief in teamwork. He played softball in a men’s league for many years and cherished every inning. As was an avid fisherman who instilled his passion in all his children. He served as president of the SWFL Angler’s Club, sharing his love of the water with friends old and new.
More than any hobby or accomplishment, Owen built a family life full of laughter, loyalty, and love. He taught all five of his children how to swim. He adored each of his nine grandchildren who called him “Papa Ed” and never missed a chance to attend every game and event he could to cheer them on.
Owen had a sharp mind and a playful competitive streak. He was known for completing the New York Times crossword puzzle in pen and watching Jeopardy! alongside him meant accepting that he would know nearly every answer.
Owen’s legacy is one of devotion: to his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his community, and the many people whose lives he touched simply by being himself. His presence was steady, warm, and full of life, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Owen is survived by his loving wife, Ethelyn; five children, Gregory Walter (Phyllis), Jeffrey Walter (Mercidita), William Walter (Eunice), Amy Wyatt (William) and Brian Walter (Joselyne); three siblings, Judy Moore (Al), Mary Boggs and Danny Walter (Janis); nine adored grandchildren, Jordan, Alyssa, William, Owen, Hosanna, Isaac, Luke, Ethan and Oliver.
A Celebration of Owen’s Life will be celebrated at 6:00 PM, Friday, April 17, 2026 at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 950 Chiquita Blvd. S., Cape Coral, FL 33991. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 5:00 PM until the service time.
