

Raymond C. Mahns, age 79 of N. Ft. Myers was born in Lowell, IN on October 25th 1937. He died Wednesday at Gulf Coast hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Mahns was preceded in death by his brother, Larry J. Mahns, and his sister, Sharon Wright. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and three children: Dianne Fortune (Larry), Dean Highfill (Beth), and Cynthia Trombley (Neal). He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Eric Fortune, Kyle Fortune, Sophie Fortune, Chase Trombley, Bryce Trombley, Kate Highfill, and Jessica Highfill. Ray served in the Army (C Company, 2D Battalion 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division) during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1970. He earned several medals of commendation, including two Purple Hearts. Following his service, Ray moved to Lehigh Acres, Florida.
He retired from the Postal Service in Lehigh Acres and the Lee County Tax Collectors Office after many years of dedication.
In his spare time, Ray was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was also recognized for his faithful support of the VFW’s National Veterans Service Program and as an active member of the American Legion.
Services will be held on Sunday, July 23, at the Coral Ridge Funeral Home. Visitation is from 2:00-4:00 PM with funeral services following. Sergeant 1st Class (Retired) Mahns will be interned at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, to the Florida “Bay Pines VA Healthcare System” facility.
