Thelma Louise Wilson, age 90, of Cape Coral, Florida passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2022. Thelma was born October 15, 1931 in Daleville, Indiana to Lester and Mary Snodgrass Boner. She has outlived her four siblings: Lester Jr., Bertha, Beulah and Phylis.
Thelma left home at the age of 16 to work at Jay Garment and to be independent. She married Bob Wilson in 1950 and together they built a grocery business, with eight stores in Indiana, namely Bobs IGA and ended their business with Bob's Finer Foods in Huntington. Thelma was the main Bookkeeper for all the stores.
Thelma also learned to fly twin engine planes and was a license pilot.
Later, after divorcing and moving to Florida in 1981, she studied and became a licensed Boat Captain, owning a 21 foot Chriscraft Cruiser that was kept at her dry dock. She loved bowling and played on a league for several years along with bocce ball.
Thelma built her home in Cape Coral, Florida in 1982, on a canal with her partner Cass and lived independently until 2018. She enjoyed a relationship with Cass, until his death.
In 2018 Thelma moved into Assisted Living. She remained independent even then, inviting a local mobile dog grooming business at her facility; which most of the residents continue to enjoy to this day. She also leaves behind her devoted friend Pat Sawyer that was always most supportive.
Thelma was independent and ahead of her time, an early feminist, she was engaging and she never met a stranger, just like her mom. Thelma's mom always said "all my girls went to the horses but this one, she went to the dogs." Thelma leaves behind her beloved dogs BJ and Baby, who will reside with her nephew Tom Ankrom.
There will be no burial, as Thelma's wish was to be cremated. Celebration of life services will be announced in the near future and will be held in Indiana. Please sign up for notifications to receive updates.
