Nécrologie de Jo Anne Kenney-Salb
Jo Anne Lavon (Armstrong) Kenney-Salb Jo Anne passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. Born in Indianapolis on March 12,1927, she was the daughter of Raymond Stewart Armstrong and Dorothy Fern (Robertson) Armstrong. Jo Anne graduated from Southport High School in 1945 and earned her B.A. and Master’s degrees from Butler University. She taught 3rd and 4th grade at St. Lawrence and St. Matthew’s Catholic schools and then taught history and English at Lawrence Central High School for 27½ years. When Jo Anne was honored with the Retired Teacher Award from the Lawrence Township School Board, Caroline Hanna, her longtime principal, expressed her gratitude: “In addition to the highlights of American history, the glories of English grammar, and the love of literature, Jo Anne taught responsibility, perseverance, and attention to detail, as she guided the juniors through the intricacies of planning, arranging, and, finally, dancing the night away at the prom for 18 years!” A lifetime Hoosier, she moved into her Carmel home in 1957 and joined Woodland Country Club and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She later became a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church when that parish was established. Jo Anne enjoyed the Red Hat Society and was a longtime member and secretary of the Spring Green Garden Club. Always intellectually curious, Jo Anne had a passion for history, travel, and the arts. As a young girl growing up during The Great Depression, she traveled to all 48 states with her Aunt Gladys and Uncle Fred. A voracious reader, she preferred biographies and all things British. A wonderful friend and neighbor, Jo Anne was known for her joyfulness, honesty, integrity, and unwavering optimism, always putting others before herself. Jo Anne was adored by her family. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Dr. John R. Kenney (d.1998) and Francis E. Salb (d. 2018). She is survived by her children: Theresa Mickler, Kevin Kenney, Kathleen McCrillis (Steven), and Brendan Kenney; grandchildren: Patrick Mickler (Daniel), Christopher Stewart Mickler-Lemelle (Sam), Scott McCrillis (Jen), Elizabeth McCrillis Loh (Jordan), and John McCrillis (Mary); great-grandchildren: Beckett, Caroline, Finn, John Paul, and William. Visitation will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 10655 Haverstick Road, Carmel, from 9:15-10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, November 22. The funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Father John Johnson as celebrant. Jo Anne will be interred at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Flowers may be sent to the church. Contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Leppert Mortuary.
