Joanne Smith Murphy, 78, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on April 27, surrounded by family after a long illness. Born on March 5, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Paul Tincher Smith Jr. and Martha Nicol Smith. Joanne lived a life devoted to her family, friends, faith, and her community.
A proud Boilermaker, Joanne graduated from Purdue University in 1969 with a degree in social work. During her time at Purdue, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, forming friendships that lasted throughout her life.
Joanne was dedicated to being a full-time homemaker, nurturing a loving and supportive home. Later, she enjoyed a successful second career as an executive assistant before retiring in the early 2000’s. In retirement, she cherished her escape from the Indiana winters, spending time in Cape Coral, Florida, alongside her sister, Maralee Cappatocio of Waterford, MI, where they made many wonderful memories together.
An avid reader and a sweet soul, Joanne lived an active and vibrant life. She could often be found enjoying long walks, always making sure to hit 10,000 steps each day. Her warmth, kindness, and steady presence touched all who knew her.
Joanne was a longtime member and Deacon of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. She was also a dedicated supporter and volunteer of the Damar Guild, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is enriching the lives of people with disabilities.
She is survived by her two sons, Christopher (Abby) Murphy and Ryan (Sarah) Murphy; her sister, Maralee Cappatocio; and three grandchildren, Jackson, Annabel, and Mabel Murphy, who brought immense joy to her for many years.
In honor of Joanne’s life and her giving spirit, memorial contributions may be made to the Damar Services or the Alzheimer’s Association of Indianapolis.
