Molly was born on January 20, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, to Edgar Rinehart and Gladys Potschner Rinehart. She graduated from North High School in Columbus, continued her education at The Ohio State University, and graduated from Aquinas college.
In 1963, she married Jack Gordon, and after their move to Michigan, they raised their two children, Mark and Kristin. Molly devoted her early years to nurturing her family. Jack’s job brought several relocations, and Molly embraced these moves with enthusiasm, finding opportunities for professional growth while also showcasing her remarkable talent for interior design by creating warm and inviting homes. And she was heavily involved in her children’s school activities, becoming the ultimate swim team mom.
After the kids went off to college, Molly went back to school herself, getting a Bachelor’s in Information Systems from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI. She then pursued a distinguished career in academic computing, first at Wayne State University, followed by the University of Cincinnati, and ultimately serving as Director of Academic Computing at the University of Notre Dame.
Molly had a lifelong love for classical music. (Not that she didn’t also enjoy a little Elton John or Queen.) From high school onward, she sang with vocal groups and choirs wherever she lived. She especially treasured her time with the South Bend Symphonic Choir, performing at renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall and the White House. In 2017, she fulfilled a bucket list dream and attended a concert at the Sydney Opera House, featuring the piano concertos of Sergei Rachmaninov.
After moving to Indianapolis in 2018 to be closer to her children, Molly joined the Fishers Community Chorus, where she remained a valued member for five years. In addition to her love for music, Molly was a dedicated volunteer for local arts centers and an avid cyclist. She led an active and enriching life.
She is survived by her son Mark (Dana Renay) Gordon; daughter Kristin (William) Smith; grandchildren Samuel Gordon, Noah Gordon, Clare Gordon, Cameron (Evan) Foley, Bailey (Alex) Allee; step-grandchildren Maxwell Renay-Lopes, Jacob Alexander, Ella Renay-Lopes; great-grandsons Micah Foley and Wescott Foley; sister Ellen Rinehart (Eric Bohr); and former husband Jack Gordon.
Molly’s kindness, warmth, and enduring spirit will be cherished by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will take place at noon on Friday, January 3, at the Village of WestClay Provost Clubhouse, 12545 Meeting House Road, Carmel, IN 46032. There will be a mix of her favorite foods. Casual dress please.
