On Tuesday, January 15th, Pauline Norton Crumley, 93, left us to continue her journey in God’s hands. Polly had just celebrated her birthday on January 12th. Polly was active in her community, the United Methodist Church and in the education of many children. She truly valued her many cherished friends and family. The world is a better place because Polly was in it.
Polly grew up on a farm in the foothills of eastern Tennessee. Polly graduated from high school in Decatur, TN at the age of 16 and proceeded to college at East Tennessee State. In college, she earned a degree in education and played basketball for ETSU in the Women’s Industrial league; for many years she held the scoring record of 52 points in a single game. While in college, Polly met and married John, her husband of 67 years. She began her career as an executive assistant at the Eastman Kodak plant in Johnson City, TN and later in life earned her master’s in education and taught office education and special education. Polly was an avid golfer and tennis player enjoying both activities and traveling on teams to compete. She was a phenomenal cook, and loved sewing and quilting. Polly had a real sweet tooth; she loved cakes, pies, cookies and especially chocolate candy and ice cream. She retained her passion for the game of basketball throughout her life holding definite opinions as to who the best players were. The family knew better than to interrupt her during the NCAA playoffs!
Polly is proceeded in death by her husband John, mother & father (Mary & Jake Norton), 4 sisters (Louise, Goldean, Bobbie Jean and Betty Jo) and 3 brothers (Sam, Jim and Jake). She is survived by her children Patricia Crumley DeRamus (Gene), Beth Crumley Lough (Jeff), John “Chip” Crumley (Julie), her grandchildren Megan Lough Bolgren (Jordan), Alex Lough (Jessica), Harper Crumley, and five great grandchildren Skyler, Grayson, Everett, Brooks and Kellan.
