Born in a southern province in China, she moved her family to Hong Kong and then immigrated to the United States settling in Chicago, IL, in 1968.
Sau-Yin built her skill set running a dry cleaners and taking cooking lessons, then opening up the first Chinese restaurant, Chinatown, in downtown Carmel, IN in 1975. She learned to drive at age 40, she was an experienced and fruitful gardener, and even at age 89 would walk a mile to buy a gallon of milk by herself.
She led by example. There was never a job too large or too small that she would not tackle. She was a strong, determined and fiercely independent woman. We will miss her every day.
Sau-Yin is preceded in death by her husband, Tse-Ming and son, Sammy Yau. She is survived by three sons and three daughters-in-law, (Elizabeth), Flickie Sam (Sharon), Joseph (Kee), Thomas. She was a loving Grandmother to four grandchildren, Felix (Jessica), Sean (Whitney), Megan (Steve), Sherman (Stephanie) and three great-grandchildren, Sofia, Henry, and Benjamin. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
A visitation for Sau-Yin will be held Wednesday, November 17, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Leppert Mortuaries – Carmel, 900 N. Rangeline Rd., Carmel, Indiana 46032, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 AM. Burial will be scheduled at a later date in Chicago, IL.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that friends and family plant a vegetable in their garden in Sau-Yin's Memory.
