She was born October 7, 1924 in Bloomfield, NJ. Bette resided in Lancaster, PA for 44 years, prior to moving with her family to Farmers Branch, TX. She was a graduate of Hempfield High School in 1942. During WWII, Bette worked at Armstrong Cork Co. in the payroll department.
Bette was the beloved wife of 52 years of the late Martin E. Darrah. She was the devoted mother of John Darrah, Elizabeth “Betsy” (Robert) Lisowski, Anne “Peggy” (John) Adams. She was the energetic and fun-loving grandmother to Joseph, Andrew, Michael, Matthew, John and Benjamin. She had six great-grandchildren. She was the dear sister of Richard W. Stephens and a fond aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Bette had a wide range of interests and many friends. She was an avid reader, a talented bridge player, a collector and refinisher of antique furniture, and a hospital volunteer. From childhood, she was an enthusiastic philatelist and doll collector. She was an election campaign volunteer and was an original Bush Belle. Bette was interested in British Royalty and traveled many times to England to visit her British pen pals.
Bette loved opera, classical music, English literature, and history. She always had a stack of reference books beside her chair. She enjoyed both current and classic movies, the New York Times crossword puzzle, and Jeopardy. As a member of the “greatest generation,” she was very patriotic and loved parades, flying the flag and decorating for national holidays.
Bette’s quick wit and charm will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
