George Philip of the Assariethu family in Edasserimala, Kerala, India, known as Pappachi to those who loved him most, entered eternal rest on May 16, 2026 at the age of 94, after a rich life lived in faith, family, and service.
Pappachi was born to the late Philip and Sosamma of Assariethu, who were members of the Maramon Mar Thoma Church. The eldest of his siblings, he was brother to Thankamma and the late Varghese. He was only twelve years old when his father passed away. Then his maternal uncle, Mammen of the Ancheril family in Edathua, lovingly took him under his guardianship. Pappachi spent his school years in Edathua. In time, another uncle, Zachariah of the Kuzhivelil family, brought him to Munnar, the place that would become home and where the next chapters of his life would unfold.
It was in Munnar that Pappachi married Aleyamma, and together they built a home filled with faith and perseverance, raising four children: Sudha, Subi, Suja, and Sukhu. A devoted member of the Munnar Mar Thoma Church, he stayed faithfully engaged in its life over many years, giving generously of his time and heart to the parish.
Professionally, Pappachi served with the Kerala State Electricity Board, and his entrepreneurial spirit soon found new expression as a partner and director of Sahiadri India Pvt. Ltd., a cardamom plantation in the Munnar hills he loved.
In 1982, Pappachi moved to the United States, where he became one of the early and active hands in the founding of the Mar Thoma Church in Dallas, a community he helped nurture from its very beginnings. His enterprising nature continued to flourish on both sides of the world, with ventures rooted in both Texas and India. In his later years, Pappachi made his home in Denton, Texas, where he was lovingly surrounded by family and the dear friends from his church community.
Pappachi is survived by his beloved wife, Aleyamma; his sister, Thankamma; his children Sudha, Subi, Suja, and Sukhu, along with their families; six grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Pappachi lived fully and loved deeply. A man of faith, hard work, and quiet generosity, he leaves behind a legacy of devotion and love that will live on through the generations he so lovingly raised.
