While still very young, Reuben’s family moved to Little Field, TX where his father owned a laundry mat. He went to Anton School. As a teenager, he accepted Christ (May 23, 1949). Three years later, one month before Reuben’s 18th birthday, he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for three years during the Korean War. The Navy took Seaman Wright around the world and to Japan on various aircraft carriers (USS Bon Homme Richard CV31 Aircraft carrier, USS Preston DD-795 Battle Ship and USS Boxer CV21 Aircraft carrier). During his stint in the Navy, he rededicated his life to Christ (November 1954), feeling called into the ministry. The day before his 21st birthday (April 29, 1955), Reuben was separated with a honorable discharge from the Navy and enrolled in Bible Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas (May 9, 1955). After formal ministry preparation, he was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1957. Providentially, he met and married Melba Louise Bentrup while attending seminary. They were married on December 25, 1957. He served as an Associate Pastor in charge of the bus ministry at Bible Baptist Church, Champaign, IL, Associate Pastor in charge of the bus ministry and children’s church at Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Dallas, TX and as head pastor at Second Baptist Church, Port Lavaca, TX.
