Steve was born on May 16, 1958 in Charleston, South Carolina, to James John Fimian, LCDR, US Navy and Patricia Haney Fimian. He was the third of seven children born in the span of twelve years. He grew up in a lively, close-knit family shaped by faith, discipline and deep loving bonds. Because of his father’s naval career, the family moved frequently during Steve’s early childhood, ultimately settling in Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the home where his beloved 95-year-old mother still resides.
Steve’s parents placed great importance on providing a Catholic education for their children. He attended St. Gregory and Christ the King Catholic Schools and graduated from Norfolk Catholic High School in 1976. From an early age, he loved music, gameplaying, all sports and was a lifelong, devoted reader of the daily sports news section, which was an interest that stayed with him throughout his life.
Steve was accepted into the College of William and Mary, where he graduated in 1980 with a degree in accounting. After completing his studies and passing the CPA exam, he began his professional career with Main Hurdman in Midland, Texas, before relocating to Dallas, which would become his lifelong home. Naturally studious and drawn to mathematics and logic, Steve built a distinguished career as a CPA, working in public accounting for 18 years before starting his own practice in 1999.
Steve was deeply committed to his clients, working tirelessly to protect their livelihoods and, whenever possible, reduce their tax burdens. In fact, one of his nicknames was “the Taxman,” and everyone who knew him knew how much he loved his work. Steve was especially grateful for his staff, whose dedication and partnership were essential to fulfilling the firm’s mission. He recently merged his practice with Schrakamp, PLLC. It was incredibly important to him to find the right hands for whom to entrust his clients, as many of them were cherished friends.
Above all else, Steve was a devoted husband to Mary Fleming Fimian and father to three children: Joseph (Joe), age 28, Molly, age 25 and John, age 18. Steve and Mary were wed on April 23, 1994. His family was the light and purpose of his life. He spent countless hours with his children talking about sports, numbers, and ideas and all three enjoyed a shared appreciation for numbers and analytical thinking. The family cherished their summer vacations together, often traveling throughout Europe and the Pacific. Summertime was a treasured season for the family especially when the older children were home from college and able to travel together.
Steve was an active and dedicated member of the St. Rita Catholic community. His children attended Jesuit and Ursuline academies, and the family was supportive of these institutions through generous giving. Steve truly did have hundreds of “close” friends and drew strength and comfort from the many who prayed for him throughout his illness. His interests were wide- ranging, with a particular passion for sports. He especially enjoyed coaching soccer and baseball with his children. The family also enjoyed watching football and basketball games on mute, with Steve’s music playlist in the background, knowing conversation was always welcome. Those were the best of times, especially most recently, and brought him great joy.
Always an optimist, Steve was confident he would win the battle against cancer. Though he fought valiantly until the end, the disease spread and he was unable to fight further. Steve voiced his acceptance of God’s will and was at peace in his last days. Many of his friends, clients, and family members visited him in his final days at T Boone Pickens Hospice Center and reminisced about good times. To both family and friends, Steve will be best remembered as one of the most caring, generous, kind, and principled men they’d ever known. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Steve always felt he was so blessed in life.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Steve’s life at a funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at St. Rita Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas.
