To Steve's family... I was only just told about Steve's illness and death.  My sympathies to you... He was so kind to me (not just at Toastmasters), but in helping me with my faltering psychotherapy/clinical social work practice. I loved his slow, unperturbed way of speaking and still hear him in my mind.  Comfort and strength to you all.

Oh my God, I just found out about about Steve's passing.  He was there for me since the late 80's, what a genteel soul.  I will truly miss your concealing and friendship, "my friend."   Peace be with you.

I just now found out about Steve's passing. I began as Steve's patient and it grew into a friendship.  I always looked forward to seeing him. The humor and the wisdom of the man were always there. He was truly the wisest man I have ever known and I doubt I will ever find one to match him.  He was an important part of my life and helped me to see myself more clearly. I loved the way he saw spirituality and God. His biggest impact on my life was the encouragement he gave me in finding my first love, which turned out to be my life's biggest blessing.  I once told him that it was all to good to be true, to which he answered, "This is so good....It must be true!". I have that sitting in a frame on my desk even now, over fifteen years later.  Well, Murphy, I will miss you for now but I will catch up to you at some later point when our paths will once again cross.

Steve, your friendship, guidance and wisdom were life-changing for me and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am so saddened to read of your passing today. You will never be forgotten and I am so blessed by the time we shared together. My deepest sympathies to Pat, Chris and all who loved you.

What a delightful soul that taught us so much about living. My husband and I will be forever grateful for the strength and support you gave us through our dark and difficult time. May you rock in heaven like you did down on earth.

I have been going to Steve for counseling for twelve years and started seeing him for family problems and the death of my parents. I was a private person and kept my feelings locked up inside but after talking with Steve, that all changed. I swear there were days I thought I was not going to make it but he would always end up making me feel like I was walking on air and so happy about life. I began to think of Steve as my spiritual teacher. He taught me to look for God in the trees, in the flowers and in nature. When I feel the wind blow now I think of God and Steve. After every meeting, he would hug me and bless me and say: " Stay well my friend". Always thinking of me. I just found out of Steve's passing July 9, 2010. I found out from my niece who was seeing him that he was going to call me the week he died and tell me of his condition because again thinking of me he wanted to tell me himself and not let me hear it from someone else not even my niece. He was always so kind and considerate and he really cared about people. I would always be so amazed that he would remember my family members names and what they were doing at the time. He would love to suggest a good book to read. He loved to laugh and that always made me laugh too. I did not get to say good bye and that hurt but now I think, how could anyone say good bye to Steve. He was like a Father, brother and a best friend and no one could ever say good bye to someone like that. I know he is in Heaven and that is where he will be waiting for all of his family and friends. I can hear God say to Steve, a job well done. Someone like Steve is never gone, he is right there in your heart. It just felt like home with Steve and for those of us he loved and counseled he won't be too far away from us and there was always enough love to go around when it came to him. He touched our hearts and our souls and forever will be a part of all of us. We were so lucky to have him here even if it was only a short time. He won't ever be forgotten. At lunch several weeks ago, it was clear that Steve was ready to move on. He looked forward to what was next on his path.  On that afternoon, Steve asked me to share the following. Steve said of himself, "I have an eclectic faith. I truly believe that all faiths in their purest forms point to one central divine reality - one holy path - one God.

Hello Loved Ones of Steve Murphy, I wish to offer my recent impressions of my 1st cousin, Steve, to his friends and family.  Unfortunately only recently, have I had the opportunity to have enjoyed Steve's humor, wisdom and kindness, through our emails.  I am so sorry for this great loss, as all that I have learned about Steve, was delightful, unique and positive.  Our loss is great.  Traveling extensively in my adulthood and recent years, I regret that I had lost contact with Steve, who was so friendly and fun, during my childhood memories in East Texas. My heartelt sadness and my love goes out to Steve's family, friends and loved ones. It is wonderful to know that Steve made a positive difference, in other's lives!  Let's pay it forward, in Steve's honor ~

Pat, there's a wonderful saying, "That to live in the hearts of other, is to never die."  Well, Stephen lives not only in our hearts but in our minds and souls.  He guided so many of us through troubled waters and always with deep personal concern, clarity and laughter.  What a truly extraordinary person he was.  I will be quoting him and his Murphyisms all my life.  Thank you for sharing him.

Steve was my main man. He was always there for me and I know he still will be. Have a good journey, amigo.

Steve was a wonderful man.  A true gentle spirit and heart bigger than anyone I know.  My life is better for knowing him and having him as my friend.  I will miss him dearly.

Precious Steve Murphy, how blessed I was to have had you as one of my dearest friends for almost my entire lifetime.  I will never forget all of the times we shared together as I watched how loving you were to "others"...It seems that you always focused on "others".  You never said one word about your own health issues...how unselfish a man you were and how we all learned from you along the way.   God bless you Pat and all of Steve's dear family.  I am a better person because of your loved one and I thank you so much for sharing him with all of us! To Pat and Family, 

Jon Lee suggested I see Steve after my husband died 23 years ago.  I was a hard case, resistant, stubborn and not at all at ease with letting my psyche just hang out for some stranger to see.  Steve superbly walked me thru my grief tho I must admit it took me a looooong time but I finally got to the other side of it.  He also saw my two sons and listened to them as well.  I cannot think that any other therapist could have helped me the way Steve did with his humor and shoot from the hip approach.  He could call your bluff and yet be as caring and gentle as a mother with a new-born babe.  His jokes, well, perhaps the less said about those, the better!

He has gone too soon and many of us will miss him.  I hope God is prepared for him as he will make his presence known.  I just hope he thoroughly vets his jokes before telling them up there!

I am so saddened to hear of Steve's passing.  He was my counselor when I was going through a rough divorce.  He was very kind man and an inspiration to me then and now.  I still quote some of the advice Steve gave me.  God Bless his family and may Steve rest in God's loving arms for all eternity.

Steve was an amazing and gifted counselor to me at a very difficult time.  He helped me find the answers inside of myself without giving them to me.  And, he made me laugh.  What an incredible service he provided in his lifetime.  He will be missed.  My thoughts and prayers are with the whole Murphy family.

So many years ago, it’s a blur to exactly when we meet.  A troubled teen, ill prepared to take the on the world, landed in your caring arms.  You guided me, gave me a warm place to discuss my feelings and watched me grow.  Calmed my angry self, healed my physical body after a nasty accident, an accident most would consider one lucky to be alive.  You’re truly a miracle worker.  I believe you will eternally be watching over me and my family and I hope to catch a glimpse of you as you swing by to see how it’s going.  One thing I don’t remember from this blur of time is me ever telling you…  Thank you, thank you with every fiber of my soul.
I love you brother.
