

He was born in Jacksonville, Texas to John Thurmond and Oneta Aven Murphy, both deceased. His only brother, Tim, died in 2008. Steve attended public schools in Jacksonville and Central Baptist Church. He graduated from Baylor University with a BA in social work and earned his MA from the University of Texas. He was also a veteran of the Vietnam war.
Steve was a professional counselor for more than 30 years in the Dallas area. He was an extremely charitable man, volunteering his time and tithing to those in need. Steve spent many years volunteering with Hospice and mentoring ill children at Dallas Children's Hospital, while supporting many local and national charities.
Steve's humor was legendary among his many friends and clients as was his relationship and connection with God. He was truly God's ambassador, studying and sharing "A Course in Miracles."
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Pat; son, Dr. Chris Murphy of Flagstaff, AZ; stepdaughter Amy Brothers and her husband Johnny of Dallas; Sharon Stromberg and her husband Robert of Austin, TX; three grandchildren, Madison, Jaden and Kada of Dallas. Nieces and nephew are John Murphy and his wife Louise of Columbia, S.C., Stephanie Hale of Napier, New Zealand, Susan Hale and husband Joel of Austin, Aaron Cooper and his wife Leah of Dallas and Hannah cooper of Dallas; his favorite brothers-in-law, Jerry Cooper, Dallas and Robert Stromberg, Austin. Great nieces and nephews are Gavin Murphy, Georgia and Harrison Hale, Kai, Conner and Sam Stromberg-Hilterscheid. Special close friends and family include Judy Brice Cooper, Jessie Brice and Robert and Joanna Sweitzer.

A memorial service celebrating Steve's life will be led by the Rev. Jon Lee in the Rhoton Funeral Home Chapel, Carrollton, TX. at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 17th.
