Dr. Benjamin Eugene Popham Jr.

Dr. Benjamin Eugene Popham Jr., age 81 of Cartersville, GA passed away on Friday, August 2, 2024 surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born in Rockmart, GA on September 22, 1942 to the late Dr. Benjamin Eugene Popham Sr., and Frances Yoe Popham.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Eugene Popham. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Glenda Cochran Popham, daughters, Gay (Bryan) Miller and Valorie (Tim) Ennis and son, Ben Popham III; grandchildren Hayes Miller, Molly Miller, Lauren Ennis and Mia Miller and brother Dr. Ray (Gay) Popham.

Gene was a graduate of Rockmart High School, West Georgia College and a 1966 graduate of the Southern College of Optometry. He practiced as an optometrist in the community of Cartersville and surrounding areas for over 45 years, while maintaining his memberships with the Georgia Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. As a charter member of Heritage Baptist Church in Cartersville, he served as a deacon, went on mission trips and devoted his time to several church committees. Gene was a former member of the Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited and volunteered at the Bartow County Sheriff Department. He was a current member of both the Elks Lodge and Bartow County Model Aviation, Inc.

Outside of his professional pursuits and community service, Gene found joy in various hobbies and interests. Along with being a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, he was an avid reader, a pilot, knife maker, radio control pilot and always fiddled with the latest gadgets and gizmos, among many other endeavors. Most of all he was devoted to his family, whether it was a visit to the beach, family reunion, or just a family dinner and loved the company of his dog, Rili.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at Heritage Baptist Church 1070 Douthit Ferry Rd, Cartersville, GA with Rev. Dr. Alex Gallimore officiating. The interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens with Hayes Miller, Todd Ellis, Derrick Lowery, Mitchell Lowery, Preston Lowery and Adam Lowery serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the church.
