Born October 22, 1937 in Carroll County, GA, she was the daughter of the late William
Ralph and Alma Turner Shirah. She grew up in Carrolton where she attended West
Georgia College, receiving a BS in elementary education. She later earned a master’s
degree in elementary education from Georgia State University. She taught kindergarten
and readiness for 31 years at various locations including Wadsworth Elementary in
Decatur, Marietta City Schools, and Centerville Elementary in Gwinnett County.
Her interests outside of early childhood education included her Irish heritage, baking,
genealogy, antiques, choir, and reading. She showered her grandchildren with books,
treats, and loved attending their academic, athletic, church, and musical events. Mrs.
Johnson loved to visit her son's family in Manhattan. She was a member of Heritage
Baptist Church, Cartersville.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her brother, William
Jackson Shirah. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Albert Lee Johnson, Sr.; daughter
and son-in-law, Katherine J. and Jayson W. Fields of Kingston; son and
daughter-in-law, Lee Johnson Jr. and Margaret F. Johnson of New York City; five
grandchildren, Spencer, Henry, and Frances Fields; and Timothy Dean and Owen
Albert Johnson; a number of nieces and nephews, and several close cousins.
Visitation will be Friday night 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Owen Funeral Home 12 Collins
Drive, Cartersville, GA. Funeral service will be held Saturday at Heritage Baptist Church 1070
Douthit Ferry Rd, Cartersville at 10:00 AM officiated by Reverends Michael Tutterow
and Jeff Wright. A brief graveside service will follow at Carrollton City Cemetery at 1:00
PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Heritage Baptist Church Cartersville or
the American Diabetes Association.
Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Dr. SE, Cartersville, has charge of the funeral arrangements.
