Monk was a loyal employee of the United States Post Office for 40 years. He loved talking about the USPS and his many friends and colleagues that he met on his tenured journey through the years. Monk began his career at the young age of 20 years old, and worked his way to become Postmaster at several different locations over the years.
Monk is survived by his mother, Jo Ellen Holmes; his children, Meredith Steinmeyer (Kevin), Matthew Holmes and Joshua Holmes; his granddaughter, Ari Holmes; his brothers, Bobby Holmes (Yvonne) and Tony Holmes; the mother of his children, Dee Dixon Holmes; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Charles Edward Holmes “Big Monk”; and his grandparents, Noah and Evelyn Jenkins, Stanford Holmes, and Della Russell.
Monk was born in Cartersville on September 12, 1962 to Charles and Jo Ellen Holmes. He was an avid sports fan and adored the Alabama Crimson Tide. He was glued to the TV every fall Saturday. Monk also loved the New York Yankees and Oakland Raiders. Every once in a awhile, he would root for the Georgia Bulldogs just to make his daughter happy (of course, not against Alabama). Monk thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and taking his sons hunting and fishing.
