

Mr. King was born in Wrens, GA on January 25, 1934, the only child of Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Lee and Edna McNair King.He lived in Augusta, GA as a child and attended Richmond Academy. In 1946, he won the Augusta Soap Box Derby which solidified his entry into the National Soap Box Derby Championship in Akron, Ohio. He was one of three students in his graduating class from Wrens High School. He served in the US Army as a Staff Sargent where he was deployed to Heidelberg, Germany. He was able to travel extensively throughout Europe during his off-time. He received his B.A. in Industrial Arts from Georgia Southern University and his M.A. in Guidance and Counseling, also from Georgia Southern University. He became the first Guidance Counselor at Cartersville High School. He later accepted a position with Chattahoochee Technical College as the Financial Aid Director. After retirement, he began a 2nd career as owner of Don King Photography, which he enjoyed for several years. He was a member of Sam Jones Methodist Church for 59 years and taught Sunday School for most of those years. He served on various committees, was a Cub Scout Packmaster for Troop #125, served as the Band Booster Co-President for 3 years, and President of the American Cancer Society for the Bartow County Unit. He was a Stephen minister and the President of Prime Timers for several years.He enjoyed fishing, gardening, photography, cruising in his convertible Mustang, and of course, spending time with his family. The impact that he had on his family and friends will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean (Cline) King, son Barry King (Marcey), son Chris King (Amy), daughter Laura Cash (Ronnie), daughter Linda Tinney (Neil).Grandchildren Courtney Moore (Zack), Austin King (Anna), Madison Johnson (Dalton), McKenley King, Hayes Harrison, and Chason Tinney.
Great Grandchildren Spencer Moore, Murphy Anne Moore, Oliver Lee King, Elsie Ann King (due September 3), Levi Johnson, and Luke Johnson.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 am at Owen Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Nena Jones, retired Associate Pastor of Sam Jones Methodist Church. Visitation will be held an hour before the service. Serving as pallbearers are grandsons Austin King, Hayes Harrison, Chason Tinney, Zack Moore, Dalton Johnson, and Spencer Moore. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Garden.
