

Born on February 1, 1941, in Murphy, North Carolina, she grew up in Young Harris, Georgia. Evelyn graduated from Young Harris Academy in 1958. After High School, she attended Young Harris College. Once graduated, she moved to Atlanta to work for the Georgia Department of Transportation and was later recruited to the new District Six office in Cartersville, Georgia. Having met George Shropshire, Jr. at Young Harris Academy, they married in 1961 and settled in Cartersville. Upon the untimely death of her father-in-law in 1965, Evelyn joined the family business, Bartow Paving Company, and served as the accountant until her retirement in 2016.
Evelyn was appointed by Governor Zell Miller as a Board Member of the Technical College System of Georgia. She was an active participant and President of the Cartersville Service League. Evelyn was also a longtime member of Sam Jones Methodist Church.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Dupree Corn and Winnie Miles Corn and her sister, Caroline Corn Dockery. She is survived by her three sons: Chip Shropshire (Traci); Andy Shropshire; and Sam Shropshire (Angela): nine beloved grandchildren: Mary Madison Shropshire; Andrew Shropshire; John Shropshire; George Shropshire; Hill Shropshire; Miles Shropshire; Whit Shropshire; Sara Shropshire; and Evie Shropshire; her brother: Eddy Corn (Georgia) and sister: Margaret Weathersby (Johnny).
Evelyn was greatly devoted to her family and took great pride in her grandchildren. She was an avid antique collector who enjoyed decorating and interior design. She played ALTA tennis with great friends over the years. Evelyn enjoyed traveling and introducing her family to many great experiences and destinations throughout her lifetime. She loved spending time at the beach with family at her vacation home on Sea Island.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM on Thursday, August 15, 2024, in the Family Life Center at Sam Jones Methodist Church. The family will have a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Evelyn’s memory to Sam Jones Methodist Church or Advocates for Children.
