Beautiful and accomplished wife, mother, sister, and friend Jennifer Coleman Garr died on September 19, 2012, after a three-year battle against multiple myeloma, one she fought with hard work and humor. Jennifer was born on December 14, 1948, and grew up in Jackson, Georgia. Her parents were Rebecca and John L. Coleman.
Jennifer is survived by her kindergarten friend, high school sweetheart, and beloved husband of 43 years, David Garr. She also leaves behind two much-loved children of whom she was very proud, Sam and Rebecca Garr. Surviving, too, are her big brothers Scott and Douglas Coleman, sisters-in-law Sylvia Coleman, Kathrine Allen-Coleman, and Karen Garr as well as many nieces and nephews and good friends in Atlanta and in Sea Grove, Florida.
Jennifer attended Auburn University and received her bachelor’s and MBA degrees from Georgia State University. She had a distinguished career in banking beginning with the trust Company of Georgia and retiring as a First Vice-President of SunTrust Bank where she was an expert in the area of ACH operations and regulations and was recognized by the Federal Reserve System for her work in that area.
Jennifer made every holiday and gathering of family and friends, whether large or small, a special and sparkling occasion. She was a gracious host and accomplished cook. Anyone looking for a place to spend Thanksgiving was always invited to Jennifer’s table.
During her life, Jennifer ran the Peachtree Road Race numerous times as well as several marathons. In 2010, during her fight with cancer and following a stem cell transplant, Jennifer set a personal goal of walking the Peachtree Road Race with her children. As always, Jennifer accomplished her goal.
Jennifer’s family and friends will miss her sense of humor which shone through in even the darkest times, her love of football and flamingoes and toes in the sand at the beach, her attention to detail, her brilliant organizational skills, and her generous nature. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the International Myeloma Foundation.
A Memorial service for Jennifer will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 23rd at Haygood United Methodist Church on Rock Springs Road in Atlanta. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
