
John Lawrence “Pete” Gray passed away on Monday, November 22, 2010 at his home. A private graveside ceremony with family members will be held on Wednesday, November 24th. Mr. Gray’s family invites family and friends to attend a memorial service in honor of Mr. Gray on Saturday, November 27th at 2:00 PM at The First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville, GA. Visitation is scheduled at 1:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall of the Church. Reverend Ted Smith will officiate. Mr. Gray was born in Phenix City, AL on May 14, 1917. After graduating from Columbus (GA) High School, he attended Georgia Southwestern Junior College in Americus, GA. He continued his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, where he received a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering in 1940. He later attended Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he received a M.S. degree in Paper Technology from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in 1942. After working with B.F. Goodrich as a Process Engineer in Akron, OH and Louisville, KY, Mr. Gray began a 56-year career with Chemical Products Corporation and later its affiliate company, Dellinger Management Company, both in Cartersville, GA. He held numerous positions with the company and its affiliates, eventually serving as President and Associate Chairman of the Board. He retired in 2003. Mr. Gray served as Chairman of the Georgia Business & Industry Association and was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He was an active leader in the community having served as President of the Cartersville Rotary Club and as an Elder in The First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville. Mr. Gray is survived by his wife of 68 years, Anne Rosemary Holtz Gray; his three children, Carol Anne Gray Brown of Rome, GA (Frank), Mary Elizabeth Gray Hart of Cartersville, GA (Clark) and John Lawrence Gray, Jr. of Atlanta (Liz); four grandchildren, Laurie Catherine Brown Jones of Phoenix, AZ (Brad), Frank Alvin “Chip” Brown, III of Atlanta (Lindsay), John Lawrence “Jack” Gray, III of Atlanta and Elizabeth Winship Gray McEver of Atlanta (Hayward); and one great grandchild, Caroline Margaret Jones. Mr. Gray’s family expresses their gratitude to Brenda Bumgarner, Susan Powell, Ella Morris and James Mullinax for their loyalty and service to Mr. Gray for many years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The First Presbyterian Church of Cartersville. Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Dr., Cartersville, is in charge.
