

John Wofford Mitchell, Jr., 85, of Cartersville, passed away at Morning Pointe Assisted Living in Calhoun on May 14, 2010, after an extended battle with cardiovascular and degenerative brain diseases. He was born in Canton, Georgia on May 10, 1925, to Mattie Alford Mitchell and John W. Mitchell, Sr. Following his mother’s death when he was a small child, the family moved to Bartow County. He was raised on a farm in Emerson by his father and loving stepmother Georgia Goss Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell served in the U.S. Navy during World War Two. A highlight of his life was his selection to accompany the USS Missouri into Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, and witnessing Japanese officials going on board for the formal surrender ceremonies. Following the war, he returned to Cartersville and worked first as an electrical lineman for the City of Cartersville. He enjoyed a long career with Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Cartersville and Rome, retiring in 1983 after working more than 32 years without missing a day. He retired a second time from Bartow County where he was responsible for the structural numbering department. He was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. He served his church as Superintendent of the Sunday School, as member of a pastor search committee and was a choir member until the age of 81.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mamie Chastain Mitchell and infant grandson Shane Mitchell Wynens. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn Mitchell Wynens and son in law Jerry Brown (“Y.A.”) Wynens of Snellville and cherished grandson Blake Wynens and wife Christa Clymer Wynens of Savannah, sister Emma Whitesides of Loganville, half sister Louise Bozeman of Dacula, dear members of his late wife’s family and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Drive, Cartersville, on Monday May 17 at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. Don Hattaway and Rev. Andy Witt officiating. The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home on Sunday, May 16, from 4:00 till 6:00 P.M. Interment will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens.
