

May Eleanor Rice Hughes (Maidy) passed away at her home on December 12, 2017. She was born in Demopolis, Alabama on December 21, 1926. She was the daughter of a Methodist Minister father and spent all of her childhood moving around the state with her family. In 1947, after marrying Philip J. Hughes they moved to Virginia to begin his career as an Aeronautical Engineer. In 1954 Phil took a job at Lockheed in Marietta, Georgia and they settled in Smyrna with their 4 kids. During those years Maidy was an active member of Cumberland United Methodist Church and Sandy Springs Christian Church. In 2001 Maidy and Phil moved to a retirement community in Blue Ridge, Georgia where they were members of Cherry Log Christian Church. In 2009 they moved to Cartersville, Georgia and attended White United Methodist Church.
Maidy was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was also a great friend to many that touched her life through work, church and the charitable organizations she was passionate about. Maidy was special person that saw the good in all people regardless of their race, religion or creed. Values she instilled not only in her family but those that were close to her. She will be missed by many.
Maidy is preceded in death by her husband Philip J. Hughes and her daughter Melissa Hughes Duncan. She is survived by her sister Barbara Zdanis of Montgomery, Alabama, her 3 sons and their spouses Mike and Connie Hughes of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Jeff and Lisa Hughes of Cartersville, Georgia, Bart and Cathy Hughes of Rockwall, Texas and Son in Law Mickey Duncan of Cartersville, Georgia. Maidy also had 6 grandchildren- Brook Raasch, Barkley Hughes, Jake Hughes, Haley Hughes, Heath Hughes and Hope Hughes and 4 great grandchildren- Taylor Hughes, Peyton Raasch, Jordan Raasch and Hayden Hughes.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at three o'clock in the afternoon on Sunday, January 28, 2018 in the chapel of Owen Funeral Home with Rev. Charlie Marus officiating.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family for one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Maidy Hughes.
