Richard Winston Woodard, age 88, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022. Mr. Woodard was born on November 10, 1934 in Ellijay, Georgia. He was the son of George and Mary Woodard and had four sisters, Ann, Betty, Carolyn and Gail and one half brother Robert. Mr. Woodard was predeceased by his wife Lorena Irwin Woodard of 63 years. He is survived by sons, Allen (Betty) Woodard, Jeffrey Todd (Malinda) Woodard and Michael Charles (Julie) Woodard; grandson Dylan Shayne (Katie) Woodard, granddaughters: Whisper Sierra (Will)Wallen and Amelia Carol (John) Gossett: great-grandsons: Jaxson Weston Woodard, Alexander Wallen and Maverick Wallen; great granddaughter, Hadley Kay Gossett.
Mr. Woodard was a member of the Cartersville Church of Christ.
Mr. Woodard proudly served in the United States Air Force where he was trained to become an aircraft mechanic, and where he earned his A&P license. He served his country honorably during the Korean War and upon his return to the States, was stationed at Dobbins Air Force Base in Georgia. Upon leaving the military he began working for Delta Air lines in which he was an inspector and retired after 30 years of faithful service.
After returning to the States you would find Mr. Woodard also had a deep love for dirt track racing and in his spare time you could find him at the garage or race track on Friday and Saturday nights bringing home a checkered flag. He loved telling stories of his racing days, and his wins. A few photos of his races can be found in the Georgia Automobile Racing Hall of Fame Association, Inc.. Mr. Woodard passed down his love of racing and working on cars to his children. Mr. Woodard never lost interest in aviation and after retirement got involved building and flying ultralights. He loved the change of seasons and taking trips to the mountains with his wife and children.
Mr. Woodard would probably say that out of all the things he accomplished during his lifetime was his loving marriage of 63 years, being a father and raising his boys, being a grandfather and great grandfather and his love and belief in God. Mr. Woodard was deeply loved and will be missed by all that knew him.
