

Shirley was born on April 27, 1935, in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late George C Lucas and Mable Bond Lucas. She married her lifelong husband Wayne S. “Scotty” Barentine on July 30, 1955, on Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, Texas. Together they raised five children Beth, Lynne, Barry, Katy, and Richard.
A member of the Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, Shirley had a strong Christian faith that was exemplified in a life of service to others. She served in the Girl Scouts of America for over 50 years, the American Red Cross, and was elected as an Election Judge serving her fellow citizens. She also volunteered as a docent at the Booth Western Art Museum.
An accomplished woman, she reached the rank of Master Trainer and was the Chair of the History/Archives Committee of the Northwest Georgia Girl Scout Council as well as a Water Safety and First Aid instructor for the American Red Cross. She was also a journalist with regular columns in the Franklin Banner-Tribune in Franklin, Louisiana and the Katy Times in Katy, Texas.
Active in local politics, Shirley was an alternate to the Texas Republican convention of 1980. She was known to rub elbows with the likes of Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Scotty, her brother George Lucas, her son Richard Barentine and his wife Angie.
She is survived by her daughter Beth Countryman and her husband John, her daughter Lynne Will and her husband Gary, her son Barry Barentine and his wife Julie, her daughter Katy Barentine, as well as seven grandchildren.
Services will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at two o'clock in the afternoon, in the chapel at Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Dr., Cartersville, Georgia 30120, officiated by Rev. Kevin Lobello of Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends for visitation between the hours of twelve and two o'clock in the afternoon.
A private burial service will be held at Forest Lawn in Ball, Louisiana.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Assured Hospice Care, 9B Medical Drive, Cartersville, Georgia 30121, in memory of Mrs. Shirley Barentine.
