Carol Lundberg passed away at home with family on January 1, 2026 after complications from pneumonia. She was a person who could easily interact with everyone and leave them feeling like they had just been invited to Thanksgiving dinner. She was always concerned about the happiness of others and making all things as perfect as they could possibly be.
She met her husband and love of her life, Dennis, while they were both working at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Dennis published the weekly production meeting notes and as his secretary, Carol would take shorthand notes then transcribe them and he reviewed them for technical accuracy. Once, he marked up her rough notes in green ink and after she worked on them for a few minutes she stormed into his office and threw the notes in tears because she couldn't read his green writing and the results wouldn't be perfect. At that moment he knew he loved her but then the Navy transferred him. After a year of flying the friendly skies, they were married and the Navy then transferred them to Holy Loch, Scotland. Their first daughter, Meredith, was born there and learned to say “Daddy's damn boat”. Transferred again to D.C., their second daughter, Hilary, was born in Annapolis but before she could learn to say “Go Navy” Dennis retired and they moved back to Maine.
Carol was a full time Mom who became known for her perfect chocolate chip cookies affectionately named “Carol Cookies”. When school friends came over they always knew Carol Cookies would be in the fridge. Although she may have been old enough to be the mother to most of the other kid's parents (and some teachers), that made it even more fun. Nothing like keeping up with the younger generation. When Meredith built a house right next door and had baby Addy, Carol became Nanie and “Carol Cookies” were renamed “Nanie Cookies”.
In 2006, Meredith relocated to Raleigh and we followed making sure our house had room for ALL the girls (because Meredith now had baby Josie). Hilary had finished school at SNHU and also relocated to Raleigh. Meredith married Drew (who some people think Nanie likes best) and Hilary moved to Raeford and married Bryan, a Staff Sgt. in the Army, so the family can now root for both sides during the Army Navy game. They have two beautiful children, Henry and Emma.
Carol always liked being the “Life of the Party” which included crawling across the dining room table at times, cooking and baking with the kids. She loved to be part of their activities, recitals, competitions, and ceremonies while always cheering them on.
She is survived by her family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances she invited to Thanksgiving Dinner.
