Windi was born on March 8, 1971, in Durham, North Carolina. She attended Clayton High School and Barton College. Soon after college, she embarked on her journey in Pre-K education. Beginning as a teacher, Windi’s business acumen quickly became apparent. Remaining in the classroom for several years, her true passion, she was eventually called upon to assume greater responsibilities as assistant director and later director of several daycares within Wake County. Windi enjoyed the challenges of revamping the curriculums of these daycare centers and elevating them to higher state ratings. The staffs, students, and parents became her extended family.
Windi’s life suddenly changed in 1998 when she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. Under the care of Dr. Kevin Harrison at the Duke Heart Center she transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center where she received a heart transplant in May of 1999. While under the supervision of Dr. James Bergin and his UVA staff, she was given the chance to continue enjoying and appreciating the life she loved. Our deepest gratitude is extended to these remarkable doctors and their staffs whose knowledge and expertise, along with the altruism of her donor family, gave Windi, her family, and friends another twelve and a half years of love, life and laughter, and her second child. Her strong faith in God sustained her through this journey.
Although Windi enjoyed teaching, traveling, holiday celebrations, riding horses, and spending quality time with family and friends, her greatest joy was her family and greatest sense of pride was her two children. She never met a stranger, was consistently there with a helping hand, and always willing to share those proud “mommie moments” to anyone who would listen. Windi was preceded in death by her mother Katherine Braxton, brother Shayne Crabtree, and paternal grandparents Jack and Gurnie Crabtree. She is survived by her children Christopher Quinby of Garner and Kayla Pounds of Clayton; devoted husband Kyle Quinby of Garner; father and step-mother Charlie and Cindi Crabtree of Cary; maternal grandparents John and Rachel Braxton of Roxboro; father-in-law and mother-in-law Chris and Barbara Quinby of Raleigh; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Cara and Ryan Andersen of Eugene, Oregon; along with a number of much loved aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends. She will be missed, but her radiant smile, gentle spirit, and unconditional love will remain with us always.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 12, 2011, at 11:00AM at Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC. Burial will follow at Brier Creek Memorial Park.
