Don was one of four sons of David and Dorothy Murphy, born and raised in Elmira, NY. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland. Don joined IBM in Endicott, NY, and was among a sizable contingent of “IBMers” transferred to the Research Triangle in the mid 1960’s. He retired after 31 accomplished years, proud of working shoulder to shoulder with his group to help grow their segment of the business.
Don had an innate curiosity about the world around him and a keen, inquisitive mind. As a lifelong learner, he earned a second degree in computer science from NC State after he retired. He was generous with his knowledge and time, whether it be writing a program, reading a blueprint, or tacking into the wind.
Don is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna Chatham Murphy, their sons David and Steven, Steven’s wife Dayna, and his adored granddaughter Karli. He will be remembered by his family and many friends as a man of integrity, kindness, and subtle wit. He was the consummate gentleman and unfailingly loyal.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon on Saturday, December 1, 2012. A memorial service with Military Honors will begin at 12:00 Noon in the Brown Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, 200 S. E. Maynard Rd, Cary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution can be made to Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Gift Processing Administrator, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA 22172 (www.toysfortots.org)
