

Dorothy was born April 20, 1925 in Winchester, WV to the late Waymon and Geneva Williams Harrington. She was a graduate of Winchester School of Nursing in Winchester, Virginia. She began her career as a nurse in the Cadet Nurse Corp. Dorothy was employed as a nurse at Duke University Hospital and taught Nursing at Vanderbilt Hospital. Dorothy lived in several states during her life but after moving to NC, she ultimately called Burlington and Lake Gaston home. In Burlington, Dorothy was employed as a nurse at Kernoodle Clinic. She later served as a Disability Coordinator for the Joint Orange and Chatham Counties Head Start Program and was the first Director of the Head Start Program in Alamance County. Dorothy was an active member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School, led Youth Groups, participated in Women’s Circle and directed many Christmas Pageants. Dorothy was also very active in the Girl Scouting Program in Alamance County and served as a Girl Scout Leader for scores of young women in the area. Upon retirement, Dorothy and Ken, her husband moved to Lake Gaston where she enjoyed activities with the Lake Gaston Ladies Club and she was an active member of the Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Gasburg Va. Dorothy enjoyed arts and crafts and taught painting and craft classes to groups around Lake Gaston and at the Halifax Community College.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Kendred Luther Bryant Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Dr. Brenda Bryant.
She is survived by her daughters, Beth Griffin and her husband, David of Cary; and Kim Butler of Greensboro; son, Dr. Gregory Bryant of Nashville, TN; sister, Garnet Lake of Warrenton, VA; and grandchildren, Kevin Griffin; Kyle Griffin; Andrew Butler; Erin Butler; and Jennifer Bryant.
A memorial service will be held on July 27, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511. The Reverend Alice Kunka and Reverend Greg Hand will preside over the service. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church Cary, Music Program, 117 S Academy Street, Cary, NC 27511, Pleasant Hill Christian Church, 175 County Road 665, Gasburg, VA 23857 or the Alzheimer’s Association.
