

Dorothy Hood Thompson, 77, died peacefully Thursday, March 22, 2012 at her home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. She was known to her friends at “Dot”. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late William Eric and Lessie Hinnant Hood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Wiley Thompson.
Having grown up in Wendell, she later married and moved to Cary where she lived a busy and full life. Once a member of the Red Hat Society and “The Wednesday Dallas Lunch Bunch”, she will be sorely missed by her close church friends known to many as the “Golden Girls”. She was a long standing active member of Apex Baptist Church. Known for her witty sense of humor and her love of animals, Dot will be greatly missed by her precious cats, “Sunshine #2” and “Pee Wee” and the late “larger than life”, “Zero”, her Lhasa Apso dog.
Dot is survived by sons, John Scott Thompson and wife, Tina of Apex and Thomas Eric Thompson and wife, Mary Lynn and her son, Bobby and daughter, Alicia, all of Newport, NC; and special cousin, Jimmy Hinnant and wife, Lynda of Raleigh.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at Apex Baptist Church, 110 South Salem Street, Apex. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, 2911 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or SPCA of Wake County, 200 Petfinder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Comfort Keepers of Raleigh and Hospice of Wake County for all their kindness and wonderful help during Dot’s illness.
