Ed was born July 26, 1929 in Selma, AL to Annette Robertson and Edward D. Shivers, Jr. of Marion, AL. His education included a High School Diploma and a Jr. College degree from Marion Military Institute; he then attended Tulane University, where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF. While attending Tulane he was called to active duty during the Korean War. While serving in the military he later received his BS Degree at the University of Omaha in Military Science.
He served 28 years of active duty as a Pilot, was in Command and Staff positions, and served in the Vietnam War. He retired at Seymour Johnson AFB where he continued to live in Goldsboro, until his recent move to Cary.
He was married to the former Ann Pringle of Shreveport, LA. They had three daughters, Leigh S. Swindle (Thomas) of Birmingham, AL, Jeanne S. Williams (Richard) of Ft. Walton Beach, FL and Susan S. Junkins (Paul) of Cary, NC, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
While in living Goldsboro, Ed joined St. Paul United Methodist Church., where he served on numerous committees. He was an usher, President of the UMM, Chairman of their Annual Fish Fry and in 1996 was named as Lay Person of the Year.
After his retirement, from the USAF Ed joined the Adamsville Lions Club, and later the Goldsboro Downtown Lions Club where he became active in District and State Committees. He ran for and was elected governor for District H, and was chosen by his peers as the State Council Chairman. It was in this capacity that he worked diligently and actively for flood relief during and after Hurricane Floyd.
One of Ed’s greatest pleasures in Lionism was his work with the visually impaired at their yearly fishing tournament on the Outer Banks where he was able to work with individuals on a personal basis.
Ed’s first priority was his wife and children and he looked forward to all family events, which included numerous christenings, graduations, holidays and gatherings. He was a great inspiration and role model for family and all who knew him.
He will be greatly missed.
