Fred was born July 11, 1934 of humble beginnings in Boston, MA to Helen Carey Nagle and Thomas William Nagle. As a teenager he worked a variety of jobs including delivering eggs, soda jerk, and stacking books at Boston Public Library. During high school he joined the Marine Corps Reserves and the Knights of Columbus. In the evenings, he took an electronics course offered by the Reserves, the beginnings of his future career as an Engineer. He graduated from Boston College High School in 1952. After graduation, he worked as a machine operator at Salada Tea Company. While still a teenager, he joined the US Marine Corps and married the love of his life Mary Kennedy Nagle, a marriage that lasted 63 years until his death.
He was honorably discharged from the Marines at the rank of Corporal and also he earned a national defense service medal during his tenure. With a growing family, he selected a formal apprentice position at Boston Naval Shipyard. This allowed him the opportunity to further his studies that ultimately qualified him as Electrical Engineer. Family responsibilities required that he take on extra work as a Boston cabbie at night. On a lark, Fred and his coworkers applied for an advertised position at IBM. Fred was chosen for what was to become a 35 year career at IBM progressing from a product engineer to development engineer and ultimately to a second level manager in the systems development engineering group, responsible for the US and Canadian performance of the IBM communication controllers. While at IBM, his team developed the Synchronous Line Control Discriminator resulting in a patent issued in his name.
After his retirement from IBM in 1992, Fred worked and retired from American Airlines and then the Internal Revenue Service.
Fred was a devout lifelong Catholic and a member of St. Michael's Church for fifty years, serving as an usher and full member of the Knights of Columbus. While working at IBM, Fred became one of the original auxiliary police officers who underwent police training and served the Raleigh Police Department for eight years. He was also a proud member of the National Rifle Association. He pursued other interests including teaching Karate. Fred enjoyed his family, music – especially country and folk- particularly Johnny Cash, Peter Paul & Mary. He was known for his sense of humor and he never met a stranger.
Fred is survived by his wife Mary, his children Marie Webster (Jim) of Orangeburg, NY, Judge Dan Nagle (Val) of Raleigh, NC, Patricia Apple (Donnie) of Haw River, NC and Karen Miller (Johnny) of Knoxville, TN. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Brian and Paul Webster, Caroline Nagle, Jacob and John Johnson, Sarah Johnson (Gavin), Erika and Joseph Miller and great grandchild: Evelyn Maxfield.
