Born in the city of New York and raised in the town of Poughkeepsie and the village of Wappingers Falls, New York, George Moriarty graduated from Wappingers High School in 1950. A few weeks later, he built upon his service in the National Guard by enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Serving valiantly in Korea, he achieved the rank of sergeant, was wounded twice in combat, and was honored with a Purple Heart. His service as a Marine left an indelible imprint on his lifelong character and sense of identity.
While George was recovering from wartime injuries stateside, an unexpected hospital visit from his high school Class Secretary, Dolores Rogers (Moriarty), sparked a courtship that led to marriage on October 29, 1955. Describing her as his emotional rudder throughout their nearly 48-year marriage, he closed every card to her with his signature tribute of “forever and always.” Together they raised a family of four children. Settling first in Poughkeepsie and later transferring to Cary, NC, in 1977, both George and Dolores pursued careers at IBM, with George surpassing his 40th anniversary of employment at his retirement in 1991.
Outside of work, George attended Dutchess Community College and derived great pleasure from his involvement as Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troup 123. He enjoyed a championship season playing slow-pitch softball in an IBM league, and he was devoted to golf for decades. In retirement, George discovered a passion for taking cruises, gambling trips, and ballroom dance lessons. A voracious reader, he consumed volumes of history, anything western, and all John Wayne movies. He enjoyed coffee and a good argument twice a day with the regulars at the Waffle House in Cary.
George Moriarty touched many lives and will be greatly missed by his son, Kevin and Sue Moriarty; daughter Sharon Moore and fiancé, Dan Ebert; daughter Coleen Moriarty and beau, Kelly Cuthbertson; daughter Susan and Ray Daniel; seven grandchildren; brother James and Dee Moriarty; sister Joan and Ken Myers; sister Peggy and Ted Shriver; sister-in-law Valerie Moriarty; in-laws Jack and Alice Rogers; and lifelong friends Reno and Jeanette Giancarlo.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home for a memorial on Saturday, July 9th, at 11:00 a.m., at 200 SE Maynard Road in Cary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
