Mom enjoyed sharing stories of her idyllic childhood in Wehlau, the peace of which was shattered by World War II. She, her father and brother were drafted into the German Army, and the war ended for Mom in an American POW camp in Italy.
She came to Raleigh as a war bride and became an American citizen in 1953. In 1962, after a whirlwind romance, she married Sheriff Robert J. Pleasants and moved to Cary, where she was welcomed into the large Pleasants clan.
In 1966, Mom began her career with the North Carolina General Assembly, and in 1981 she was unanimously elected by the Senate as the first female Sergeant-at-Arms in the United States. A petite dynamo, she could quell even the most unruly visitor with a steely glance or firm “suggestion.”
Mom enjoyed reading mysteries, traveling, spending time with her family, friends and cats, and working in her garden, which she had filled with heirloom plants collected from old homes around Cary.
She is survived by her children, Charlott Ellington, Lenoir; Patricia Pleasants Lawler and husband Paul; Wilmington; Robert Pleasants, Carolina Beach; and Elaine Oleson, Apex; grandchildren Chris Cole, his wife Katelyn, and Dylan Rosebrock; her sister, Dorothea Wallrath and husband Jack, Pinehurst; sister-in-law Bertha P. Daniel and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and her husbands, Robert J. Pleasants and Ken Oleson.
Special thanks to Don Risser, the Germans, Drs. Singh, Kopp, Locklear and Beavers, Melanie Silverman of Visiting Angels, and to the family and friends who made Mom’s life so joyous.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2012 at First United Methodist Church, 117 S. Academy Street, Cary, NC 27511. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
