

Born on September 6, 1947 in Mocho Stewarton, Clarendon, Jamaica West Indies to the late Gilbert Currie and Vida McLean Currie-Defoor, Gilbert came to Cary, 17 years ago from Hopewell Junction, NY.
Affectionately known as "Herbie," Gilbert attended May Pen Primary in 1954 and Clarendon College from 1960-63 in Chapelton, Clarendon, Jamaica West Indies until relocating with his family at age 16 to Queens, New York. A never-ending thirst for knowledge found him continuing his education and graduating from Newton High in 1966 and Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1970 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
In 1970 Gilbert began work with IBM where he eventually met his future wife, Carol Ann Reid Coleman. He retired from IBM after 40 years of dedicated service as a Senior Engineer and Project Manager earning him membership to the company's esteemed Quarter Century Club.
Gilbert's gentlemanly nature, even-temper and sense of humor were only belied by his appreciation of fitness, music, foreign cultures, current events and traveling. He was an avid book reader and an accomplished runner having completed seven marathons with the Raleigh Gallaway Group.
Always kind and caring, he will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Carol; son Eric L. Currie and wife, Tonya of Holly Springs; son William E. Coleman of Brooklyn, NY; brother Phillip H.C. Currie and wife, Camineta of May Pen, Jamaica; sister Ruth May Currie of Maypen, Jamaica; one grandchild, Alexander Paul Currie, niece Melanie Natallie Currie, two great nieces Danielle and Krystal Booth and one great nephew Jhelani Graham and a host of beloved friends and extended family.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his brother Paul H.M. Currie and niece Grace White Booth.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday, November 19 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2pm on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum, 7501 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh.
