Our treasured father/grandfather Herbert Carl Fischer passed away on Easter Sunday, April 9th, 2023. Known to most as Fuz, he adopted this unique nickname shortly after becoming a grandfather. On Feb. 9th, 1929 (old!), he was born in his family home in Jersey City, NJ to Carl W. and Katherine Loewe Fischer. Soon after, the family moved to Tappan, NY, where he spent most of his childhood. After graduating from the New York Military Academy, he was encouraged by his grandmother to attend Stevens Institute of Technology. He received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering and was a proud Stevens alum. After a stint with GE and the Navy, he spent 33 years with IBM. Fuz went on to receive his Masters degree from Syracuse University.
Herb met his future bride Pauline (Polly) Connell while stationed in Philadelphia, and they moved to Endicott, NY where his four daughters were born. They eventually moved to Raleigh, NC to find what would be the Fischer's home for almost five decades. Polly and Herb did a lot of traveling in retirement, visiting almost all 50 states except Alaska and Idaho! They were married for 44 wonderful years with many, many photo albums to attest to their love for each other!
After Polly passed, Fuz continued to travel around the globe and found himself in places like Morocco, Bali, and many others. He returned from these adventures with countless pictures and hats. For the past six years, he has been living at the Cardinal at North Hills where he enjoyed the freedom to do what he wished. Anywhere he went, Fuz would always have a stack of jokes on hand to make friends, family, and even complete strangers laugh or smile!
He was preceded in death by his beloved bride Polly and his first daughter Kathleen F. Follo. He leaves behind his daughters Elizabeth Warren, Carolyn Lingerfelt and Patricia Kane; his sons-in-law Craig Follo, James Warren, Norwood Lingerfelt and John Kane; his 10 grandchildren Eric Follo(Caroline), Meghan Follo Peterman(Ryan), Kristen Follo, Ryan Kane(Christie), Patrick Kane, Erin Kane, Brendan Kane, Mark Warren(Kendyl), Donavan Lingerfelt, and Colin Lingerfelt and his 5 great-grandchildren.
The Memorial Service will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel on Friday April 14, 2023 at 2pm located at 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC. A Visitation and Ice Cream Reception will be held at the the Funeral Home in the Hackney Center immediately following the service.
