
John Joseph Filipowski died Saturday afternoon, February 5, 2011. He was born in Goshen, NY, the son of John Jacob and Genevieve Foremny Filipowski. He was a graduate of the School of Architecture at Catholic University in Washington, DC. He was employed by the Navy Department (Bureau of Yards and Docks), NASA, and the Defense Intelligence Agency. John was a veteran of WWII and served with the Air Force in various bases in this country and with the 351st Bomb Group in Polebrook, England. He was a member and past Commander of American Legion Post 67 in Cary and the Forty and Eighties Veterans Organization. John was a volunteer with Social Services of Wake County and the Wake County Schools.
He is survived by his wife, Merle Moore Filipowski; son, Paul and grandsons, Trevor and Cameron; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Keith Allison and granddaughter, Grace Allison of Ringoes, NJ. He is also survived by brothers, Adam of Greenwood Lake, NY, William of Henderson, NV, Raymond of Greenville, NC, Edward of Virginia Beach, VA and Francis of Rye Brook, NY; sisters, Mary Berlingeri of Montclair, NJ and Anne Gilday of Wyantshill, NY; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nephew, David Filipowski of Cary and many more nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, February 9, 2011 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Road in Apex. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, February 8, 2011 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
The family suggests that those wishing to donate to a memorial in John’s honor contribute to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675.
