

John was born on October 31st, 1934, in Stantonsburg, NC, to the late John Haywood Lane Sr. and Ora Lee Thompson Lane. He was a 1953 graduate of Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson and graduated from NC State College in 1957. While attending State he served as Business Manager of the Technician and was Vice President of Student Government. John married Carolyn Warlick Lane, the love of his life, on June 22, 1956.
John was a man of integrity and honor and felt it was his privilege to enter active duty with the US Army in 1958. John served with the Alaska Aviation Battalion at Fort Richardson, Alaska, the 101st Airborne Brigade in Tuy Hoa, Vietnam, and the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, NC. John was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Air Medal, and the Viet Nam Campaign Medal among others. After the Army he worked for CP&L from 1967- 1997 as Director of Load Research. John was the epitome of a classic southern gentleman. He loved spending time with his family, traveling and was passionate in his enjoyment of classical music and his involvement with his church, St. Francis United Methodist.
John was predeceased by his loving parents and three sisters, Hattie, Lou, and Frances and is survived by his precious wife of 60 years, Carolyn W. Lane, his three sons, John Lane III (Melinda), Gregory Lane (Jamye) and Chris Lane (Cricket), six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The family visitation will be on Friday, August 12th, 2016, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. A Celebration of the life of John Lane will be held on Saturday, August 13th, 2016, at 11:00 AM, at St. Francis United Methodist Church in Cary. The graveside service will take place after the reception, at 2:30 PM, at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society to fund research.
