Josephine Frances Greene Morecroft

Josephine was born in Tarrytown, NY on March 19, 1931 to Margaret Mary “Daisy” Greene and Eugene Thomas Greene (posthumously). In difficult times, Josephine and her older sister Eugenie were raised by their mother in the Bronx, NYC, where Josephine’s independent spirit and determined nature flourished. She graduated Cathedral High School in 1947 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Hunter College in New York City in 1953. She moved from the city to work at the General Electric Research Laboratory in Schenectady, N.Y. for her “first career” as a data analyst, where she met her husband, the late Barton T. Morecroft, an engineer. They married in 1959 and enjoyed nearly 46 years together. Raising three children and volunteering at the schools in multiple capacities was her “second career.” With three children in school, Josephine entered the administrative sciences program at Union College to embark on what she called her “third career.” She earned master’s degrees in industrial administration (1978) and business administration (1980). She went on to earn a PhD in information systems in 1982, which led her to accept a faculty position at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Josephine was a member of several honor societies, including Sigma Xi and Alpha Iota Delta, and was recognized for her many contributions to the department, school, and university. Jo and Bart were active in the Richmond community and volunteered for several organizations. Josephine retired in 1996 as associate professor emerita. Jo and Bart moved to Lexington, SC, where they took up boating on Lake Murray and after several years, to Cary, NC, where Jo volunteered with VITA and enjoyed her grandchildren.

Josephine is survived by her children, Steven Morecroft, Susan Morecroft and husband Kevin Linthicum, Dorothy Morecroft, and grandchildren, Gwenyth, Grace Evae, Spencer, Katherine and Mark.

A graveside service was held Saturday, August 15, 2015, at the historic Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to: Alzheimer’s Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093. The family would also like to thank the care givers at Transitions LifeCare Hospice of Wake County.
