On January 26, 2016, Kit peacefully passed away at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill, North Carolina while comforted by her husband John McChesney Latimer. Kit was born on February 7, 1931 in Kinston, North Carolina to Kathryn Brumley Armistead and William Harrison Armistead. Kit grew up with her sister Winston Armistead Ferguson in Kinston, spending the summers at the family's hotel, the Hotel Brumley, in Greeneville Tennessee. She was Grainger High School's Salutatorian and attended St. Mary's College and then the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She was a member of the Chi Omega sorority at UNC Chapel Hill and while at St. Mary's was voted Miss Wolfpack. Kit worked in the research lab at DuPont when she met her colleague and future loving and devoted husband, John.
They married on October 16, 1954 and had four children John "Jack" McChesney Latimer, Katherine "Kat" Latimer Wolf, Harrison Armistead Latimer, and Lee Latimer Loughran. Kit lived in multiple DuPont towns - Richmond, Virginia; Hendersonville, Tennessee; Waynesboro Virginia; and Wilmington, Delaware before she and John retired to Chapel Hill in 1986. Kit had a relationship with the arts throughout her life. She directed and acted in "little theater" productions, played the organ in church, loved the English language, was a commercial portrait artist, and was a powerful addition to many a church choir. In addition to being creative, Kit played competitive tennis and shot her first "hole in one" before her avid golfer husband.
She gave her time to Winterthur Museum in Wilmington, Delaware and helped as an alumna at the Chi Omega house upon retirement. Kit was devoted to her husband, her children, and her niece and nephews: Robert, William, John, Laura and Jim. She is pre-deceased by her son Jack, her sister Winston, and her parents.
Kit is survived by her husband John, her children Kat, Harrison, and Lee; their spouses Howard Elliot Wolf, Carol Pittman Latimer, and Joseph "Trey" Michael Loughran III and her grandchildren Rachel Latimer Wolf, Tucker Spiegel Wolf, Harrison Armistead Latimer, Jr., Hunter Jennings Latimer, John McChesney Latimer, Walker Pittman Latimer, Joseph Michael Loughran IV, Katherine Armistead Loughran, and Jordan Latimer Loughran.
Throughout her life Kit was known for her charming smile, beautiful singing voice and brilliant wit. She was dearly loved. A Memorial Service will be held at Carolina Meadows (100 Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill, NC 27517) on February 20th at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Episcopal Church of the Advocate, 8410 Merin Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
